Whilst there have been problems with tube failures on Philips sets in the past, I don't think it's a major issue. If you want to know about the reliability any particular manufacturer's TVs, it's worth doing a bit of research on the avforums site's CRT section mentioned earlier.
Problems can occur with any brand of set, and it's worth noting that a high proportion of sets manufactured in Europe are fitted with LG Philips tubes, without any major issues. On avforums, you can read about inherent defects affecting particular TVs from most of the major manufacturers, including Toshiba, Sony, Panasonic, etc.0
