Absolute and utter rightist blue rinse.

This ongoing diatribe by the ranting righties about the Beeb, which is the one, true, independent voice in UK journalism, merely shows a dislike of this independence and the possibility of a middle view of matters distracting from the preferred, Sunmailite poison stream.

Of course it isn't perfect - nothing devised by humans ever is...

... but what you characterise as 'left wing bias' is only, in effect, the unvarnished truth being told, a matter which has enraged the intolerant tendency whether in Goebbels or Stalin skins.

Examine your motives, if such an operation is remotely possible.

No source is unbiased, the best they can do is own up to their biases.

That's the reason I think The Economist is the best news source I've found so far in the world. They are biased but are very clear about what that bias is.

Being unbiased is impossible. To take the BBC as an example, their standard message on their news program is if there's a problem the Government should/could fix it and two ways that a Tory or Labor Government would approach the problem are examined.

There are may political/theological creeds that don't agree with Government attempting to solve each and every problem society faces. Those aren't examined by the BBC - the BBC doesn't 'do' philosophy except the very excellent Melvin Bragg program on a Monday(?) morning..

agree with almost all, so quoted to comment. They do (mainly radio, but sometimes tv) do philosophy light. But its ''not for all'' so not promoted. BBC4 and two art coverage has been SUPERB recently, so one hopes this might extend. There has also been a rather nice if not terrifically deep exploration of the History of Christianity recently. This sort of in road to academia and educational entertainment is very, very welcome. I even miss the nightly OU stuff though.:o
  • Liz Estelle, you think the BBC is unbiased because it chimes with your world view. Either you don't see the bias because everything you hear seems inherently right to you or you do see it but don't want to admit it.

My problem with the BBC is that it pretends to have no bias at all and many people believe it doesn't. People who read the Sun, the Daily Mail or the Telegraph know what they're getting. People who read the Mirror and the Guardian know what they're getting.

Personally I like to get my news from a variety of sources. Even though I'm a conservative I often read the Guardian. I wouldn't object to the BBC's Guardianista bias at all if they were honest about it. As it is, it feels like propaganda.

I find it rather amusing that you get so hysterical about the Sun and the Daily Mail yet the best news link you can find to support your arguments is from the Daily Mirror.

Unfortunately a lot of people read the Daily Mail believing it to be a broadsheet, when it is far from the case.

It is gutter press no better than the Sun, Express, Mirror or Star.

And just in case anyone thinks that Tory tax self-interest is confined to one guy:

Here's the slogan for the election imo from Brown's exchange today at QT
"The issue for the country is: Is it public services for the many or inheritance tax cuts for the few?" Brown added.
  • Good soundbite. Surprised you didn't pick the one about the playing fields of Eton. Well he has got Alistair Campbell back on the payroll hasn't he so I guess we can expect a lot more scripted lines like this.

Pity he wasn't aware that Spain isn't in the G20. Also a pity that he seems to think (assuming Spain were in the G20) that the UK and Spain being the only two G20 countries still in recession is something to gloat about.

Only so much Alistair can do I suppose.
  • Incidentally, just because a lot of people believe that the Daily Mail isn't a tabloid doesn't justify the BBC's bias, public funding and insistence that it is completely neutral. Even Andrew Marr, married to Guardian journalist Jackie Ashley, admitted that the BBC has a left wing bias in 2006.

A lot of people who only read red top tabloids believe what they read in them. They wouldn't think that the news in the broadsheets is any more reliable - just too in depth to be of interest to them personally.

I don't have a problem with papers and news channels having a bias but that bias should be admitted. The BBC is the only news outlet that denies having any bias whatsoever and it's also the only one that is publicly funded. This is not on.

It seems to me that some of you on here would just like to ban all newspapers and news channels that don't chime with your world view even when they openly admit their bias (eg the Sun) and people know exactly what they are getting.

Sounds a bit creepy to me.

This article raises some very interesting points about human nature in general, with reference to the mexican "black economy"
