  • I still can't find the curry sauce in my Mr T's , and it's a huge 24 hour one. I asked a week or so ago where it was after looking high and low, same this week looked all through the indian and chinese sections. I reckon they don't do it ...we must be too posh round here or something. Boo hoo !!

    Never mind

I'm gonna give it a go in lasagne first as I bet he won't notice, much less likely than in bolognaise i reckon. will let you know how it goes. I used to always put veg in my sauces too but he's not keen so i've stopped but maybe i'll start grating a carrot in again.
Can vouch for this... after reading this thread I started grating carrots into my mince dishes and adding oats. I used to bulk mince dishes with cubed carrot and Mr Shortie complained so I stopped. He was happy for me to try grating it in and said he couldn't even tell it was in there. Nice and cheap, and an extra portion of our 1 a day :T

I've stopped using lentils though as we're no that fussed, but still as Meatloaf says, 2 outta 3 ain't bad! :rotfl:

mbaz - i noticed quite a few things where cheaper in lidl - but i was good and walked out only purchasing granulated sugar (which was also cheaper), my friend goes to lidl first and whatever she can't get buy in there she then heads to tesco for, apparently chocolate is really good and really cheap in lidl

re cheese, instead of buying from mr t/asda etc, i get from iceland, they have a huge block of 1kg extra mature cheddar it used to be £5 but i think it might be £5.50 now, i bought one of those bowl graters that has the grater bit you pop on top and then remove and swap for plastic lid, so no wastage, then when someones wants a cheese sandwich they use grated rather than slicing huge doorstep wedges of cheese, cheese lasts for ages in our house now

    can you freeze grated cheese?

instead of buying expensive chocolate cakes from mr t, i try and make up a batch of fairycakes and top with chocolate frosting yummy...
My OH is great at carving huge chunks of cheese for sandwiches, expensive for me and very unhealthy for him! Last week I bought some Philly light (£1 in Asda) and he's spreading that on instead not that he can taste it with the pickle. Much cheaper and healthier.

  • heres the Takka Dhal soup recipe (fancy name for spicy lentil) quite a long ingredients list but worth it, dont know exactly but I dont think its that expensive either

    1 chopped onion
    2 chopped cloves of garlic
1 small deseeded chopped green chilli
    250g washed red lentils
    1 bay leaf
    3 sticks of celery sliced
    3 carrots sliced
    1 leek sliced
    1.5 ltrs veg stock
    400g chopped tomatoes
    2 tbsp tomatoe puree
    1 tsp curry powder
    half a tsp turmeric
    half a tsp ground ginger
1 tbsp chopped fresh coriander for decoration (never used it!)
    black pepper to taste

fry onion, garlic and chilli until softened then add chopped veg and cook for a few minutes. add the lentils, stock and bayleaf and cook til lentils are ready, about 20 mins, then add rest of the ingredients and cook for another 10 mins. take bay leaf out then whizz to make a smooth soup or leave it chunky

this is really nice when its cold outside with a couple of slices of warm hm bread and filling enough to have as a main meal
konMarie and fabbing all the way

They're on a middle shelf in our small tesco's (used to be on the bottom though) - not in the indian section though - along with the tinned cook-in sauces and things - sw/sour and curry sauce were together ;)

Well done mbaz - what a change from the start of the thread when you didn't know how you were going to manage. I think everyone who's read this and followed your "adventure" has learnt something. If we all keep it up we'll spot each other when we book our hols to the Bahamas with all the money we're saving lol!

I tried the Mr T's 4p curry sauce the other day, and I was really surprised, it was quite nice, I was expecting to have to add quite a lot of stuff to it, but I didn't need to, just a spoonful of curry paste, but then I was making a huge amount, so perhaps should have used a couple of tins! So thanks to all the people here who recommended it. Going to try the tinned sweet and sour sauce at some point this week as well, positively luxurious at 24p!

we tried the sweet & sour last week it was nice but not quite sour enough, think I'll addm a bit of lemon juice or vinegar next time.
