Not sure if this helps, but we have a market that packs up about 2pm. There at least 6 fruit and veg stalls. Now generally Satsumas or Bananas are 6 for a £1 but by 2pm are a carrier bag for a quid.
I then put on my best smile and ask how much Veg they will put in a bag for a quid?
As you've already paid and not 'begged' I can walk away with 3 carrier bags of veg for a quid or sometimes nothing, zilch, FREE
It doesn't work with the meat man as they can freeze meat, but I've had bread and cakes for free as long as you offer to pay.....
And I'm not some gorgeous piece, or scruffy and looking in need of a wash, I just work on the words of me late Dad 'if tha doesna ask - tha doesna get'0 -
Well done mBaz!

would you put the mango chunks in the already bulked out curry? I like to put pineapple chunks in a chicken curry sometimes, so it might work.weaving through the chaos...0

ooo good idea. Thry sauce is very liquid at the moment due to lack of meat. I have added 2 onions and of course lentils (goes without saying now!!) but I may add the mango too. TY!0 -
You are completely amazing! You'll just have to give up the payday takeaway, LOL. (I don't mean it - just enjoy it. You deserve a medal for services to value for money, let alone a takeaway).
'Squidy cookies'?!
To be honest I will schedule in a meal for 24th now so that we dont have to wait til after midnight to eat! (and then find nowhere is open!) Save our takeaway for a weekend...or buy tons of lush ingredients to make some really nice meals at home.....on darn it, I've been completely converted!! I will never eat a takeaway again!!! :rotfl:0 -
Oh No..I have come to the end of the thread. I have really enjoyed reading this today and you are a great inspiration Mbaz.
I have already taken inventory and am about to try a month long meal menu.
Never tried the lentils and oats thing but will do now.
My only problem is I don't have a Tesco, Aldi, Lidl, Morrisons or Asda to shop at~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I did that - I ended up like Jesus with his fish and loaves! Could've fed the whole street
I definitely added too many. I think I'll try the lentils though.
I added a couple of handfulls of oats and lentils to a stock pot full of veg soup, it really thickened it up, I think the trick is to start with a small amount and then it's trialling it until it's right0 -
Oh dear dazza - troll ? It is perfectly feasible that someone has no more credit available and that is all they have left. Batty - which market is that maybe it is near me!!!
On the whole I think that the OP is doing great. I did wonder about someone earlier who said that they got 30 meals out of a chicken!!! I was reminded of a Monty Python sketch - where we got out of paper bag and licked road clean!!!
I am glad that people are aware of the importance of protein in the diet and feel that pulses should be more widely used when cooking to a budget ( even though I hate them mostly! but that is me) If a pure pulse meal is being made or long term use with little meat then food combining is a must and using a good vegetarian cookbook like Rose Elliot or Sarah Brown. For example beans are not a complete protein, but when combined with a wheat based product the 2 make a complete protein, ie beans on toast. http://www.helpwithcooking.com/nutrition-information/protein-guide.html0
