You don't have an aerial if you have Sky...
What sources do you actually want to record from? With a Sky box you can only record the single channel that you are already watching, as explained above.
If you want to record/view Freeview, then you need a Freeview PVR and an aerial feed to your PVR. Then link the PVR output direct to your TV.No free lunch, and no free laptop

But the OP may not. We don't know-and I'm unclear what the OP actually wants to achieve. No free lunch, and no free laptop

At the moment I can't record anything, we have a broken dvd recorder so with christmas coming wanted to record films for later. I looked at replacement dvd recorders but there doesn't seem much choice or prcies seem over the odds with a hard drive. So trying to figure out best other option and didn't want to tie into sky for another year. Tesco had some reconditioned freview plus around £90.
As far as i know we currently have aerial and sky feed into sky box, then a lead goes up to the loft with amplifier and feeds to this and other tvs in house. which gives sky in any room but obviously same sky chanel no choice. Then the dvd recorder is plugged into tv and sky box with scart leads and a square plug lead?
So looks like spagetti junction at the back of tv. So really any suggestions for best options? Things were so easy when only video to choose from!!0 -
You haven't said what platform you want to record from-Sky, Freeview, or terrestial? No free lunch, and no free laptop

If by old style recorders you mean a VCR, they didn't record 'through the TV', but from their own internal TV tuner. That's why you could watch one channel and record another at the same time.
The only ways to record Sky are using a Sky+ box or to feed a DVD or hard disc recorder directly from the Sky box, but that means you can't watch something different at the same time.
My SIL tried linking a Sharp VCR to my new Panasonic digital TV at weekend but it was not possible to record to cassettes from the TV. We could play cassettes but they appeared as black and white only. All I want to do is record the occasional program and perhaps watch another station at the same time.0 -
Get rid of Sky and get yourself a decent Freeview PVR box which will let you record upto 2 channels at once (or watch one while recording another).
If you miss having access to the "latest" :rotfl: films on Sky then you could spend about £10/month (of the money you're saving on Sky) to sign up with LoveFilm or Tesco DVD rental and get unlimited DVDs to watch each month.0 -
He would have needed to select the AV input on the VCR to record from the TV, assuming it was plugged into a scart having composite video out.Jake'sGran wrote: »My SIL tried linking a Sharp VCR to my new Panasonic digital TV at weekend but it was not possible to record to cassettes from the TV. The fact that when you played back video and it was black and white suggests that the particular scart was set to S-Video rather than Composite Video. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
That’s what I would like to do unfortunately no freeview in my area.Get rid of Sky and get yourself a decent Freeview PVR box which will let you record upto 2 channels at once (or watch one while recording another).
