We currently have sky but don't wnat to go down the route of sky plus as it seems too dear and keep thinking about cancelling.
So i've looked at the hard drive digi box things but when I plug it in does it only record the digital tv or is it like an old style recorder wher it records any thin through the TV. So hopefully my sky.
I really don't know anything about these boxes so any help you can give please. Thanks.

If it's a Freeview PVR - i.e. a freeview box with hard drive - then No it won't record Sky.
To record Sky from your Sky box you would need to link it up to a DVD recorder with or without a hard drive.0 -
I thought a sky+ box was similarly priced0

I have a dvd recorder and I record sky on it I can only record what the sky box is tuned to.
I.e. I can’t watch one sky program and record another which you can do on sky+.0 -

The leaflet through my door said £49 + £30 installation then have to sign up to sky multi room for a year another £120. Then if I cancel sky after a year I presume I'm left with a box that does nothing?
Tesco have some reconditioned digi recorders at £89 in store.0 -

If you cancel the multiroom which has the Sky+ box, then you'd lose all the recording facilities and be left with a box that'll let you watch the Free to Air channels.Dave. :wave:0 -

If by old style recorders you mean a VCR, they didn't record 'through the TV', but from their own internal TV tuner. That's why you could watch one channel and record another at the same time.
The only ways to record Sky are using a Sky+ box or to feed a DVD or hard disc recorder directly from the Sky box, but that means you can't watch something different at the same time. There's love in this world for everyone. Every rascal and son of a gun.

Hi
I am looking at getting a digital recorder for my mum for Christmas that can record sky. From an earlier post on this forum i gather that the freeview boxes cannot do this. I bought her a DVD recorder 4 years ago and she couldn't get on with it so this will not be an option. Any advice on what the cheapest deal will be or any options would be useful.
Kind regards

You can only record the programme you are watching on Sky with a separate DVD or Video cassette recorder.
To record one Sky programme whilst viewing another you need Sky +.
If you are going to buy a DVD recorder then the best you can do is get one with a digital tuner that would allow the recording of digital terrestrial programmes independently of you TV.
The alternative would be a Freeview PVR such as those made by Humax or Topfield. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
As said, you can record sky with a DVD recorder or PVR, but unless you have more than 1 tuner, you won't be able to watch anything at the same time.
You could run another wire from the sky dish and get an extra freesat/sky box, which would allow you to record from one and watch another.
Incidentally, my standard sky box now goes into standby after an hour or 2. The cynic in me thinks that has more to do with stopping people being able to record things than saving energy!0 -
