So if you want a native Mac OS X experience, use Adium, and if you don't (for some odd reason), use Pidgin.

I'm not really sure what we're arguing about.

I've already said you can do what you want, pidgin runs on macs so therefore I suggested it.

You seem to have a problem with the suggestion.

I was just saying that one might as well use Adium, as it's a native Cocoa application. I can't think of any benefits of choosing a non-native application when there's a native one that does exactly the same thing.

I can appreciate that, but I wouldn't know that would I since I'm not a mac user. My suggestion is still valid you just dont seem to like the front end.

^Don't have a Mac - as yet. But still craving for that new and luscious 27" iMac ;)

    busenbust,

I know you're stricken with lust for the 27" iMac but you can pick up a perfect and virtually new Apple 30" monitor through eBay for less than £700.

(I bought a Hewlett-Packard 30" monitor, new, for about £550 on eBay last year.)

You can run that off a MacBook Pro or a Mac mini and it makes a great combination, with even more screen real estate than a 27" iMac. You have the advantage of two screens and the fact that the Mac itself is portable.

Not trying to dissuade you; just pointing out a lateral alternative that could suit you better and which you might have overlooked. :)

Sure, anyone can of course use Pidgin if they want.

It's not so much a question of not liking it so much as it doesn't behave the way the rest of OS X does. If the rest of OS X behaved the way Pidgin does, it wouldn't be a problem. Menus are placed at the top of the Windows for instance, instead of being placed in the menu-bar. You can't use things like OS X's built in spellchecker, dictionary, or thesaurus. Its scrollbars don't look like OS X's scrollbars.

It just doesn't feel like a real Mac application. I have the same problem with Firefox, which still isn't a fully native Cocoa app, unlike its sister project, Camino.

    busenbust,

Everyone has different needs and preferences, but the setup that I like best, personally, is to have a 15" MacBook Pro (with matte screen) berthed in a Bookendz, on one side (angled), a 30" monitor in front of me and a pivotable 24" monitor (angled) on the other side of it, connected by means of one of these.

Add a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse and it makes a nice work station. :)

The 30 inch Apple display isn't LED backlit though, whereas the 27 inch iMac is. You can also use the 27 inch iMac as an external display.

Unlike the 27 inch iMac, there's no quad-core option for a Mac Mini or MacBook Pro (not yet anyway). If one wanted a quad-core Mac with a separate display, it would necessitate the purchase of a Mac Pro ($$$).

    Me too. :D

Yeah, but you've forgotten the special polarised sunglasses he'd need to buy to deal with all those ghastly reflections off the glossy display.

Whereas, with a nice, matte 30" display and a nice, matte 24", pivoting side display, he wouldn't have to turn out all the lights and sit in the dark to be able to see what's actually on the screen. :)

And can you pivot any Apple display? No. :p

You can't even raise nor lower them.

    Let alone swivel them. :wall:

    Grunt isn't everything. :D

(Those USB2-to-DVI adaptors, incidentally, were in OWC's Black Friday Sale at a $30 discount last weekend, so I bought a second one. Glad I did, they've gone back up again, since. :( )
