No still not fixed, trying to find out how to download xp home edition for free or how to copy from daughters laptop so i can repair the desktop.
I have the product key so aparently this will not be illegal. checked all info on desktop which is nearly 4 years old and it had the xp inbuilt (OEM) so no disks held.
Really annoyed as i followed the advice on Microsoft site

if no disks came with it, is there a recovery partition?

otherwise you need to get a disk from somewhere either boworred or downloaded and burnt afresh yourself.... assuming you have an OEM edition of windows that came pre-installed you'll need an OEM windows disk

(random thought, can you use a win retail install disk to repair a win OEM os? anyone?)

  • some systems have auto reboot to factory settings (f11) I think on some systems. If not you're gonna have to get the XP disk from somewhere.
