So as per the advice i uninstalled SP3

was a very bad idea to remove SP3 you need to get it installed again ASAP to cover the widely published and exploited security holes it closes or you'll be up to your eyeballs in viruses before you know it.

Do the OS repair from recovery disk and run windows update to get the latest patches again first up.

AVG has gone very much down the toilet these days, suggest you replace with avast or similar.

other than AVG misbehaving was there any other problem with IE8? if so have you considered trying firefox?

Better advice for future: don't ever try to uninstall service packs or critical security updates unless you really really know what you're doing......

it was my intention to uninstall IE8 then reinstall sp3 then remove avg then reinstall IE found this advice on a microsoft site as i had\been getting loads of unable to conect issues and they said that IE8 may have not instaled corectly and you can only remove and reinstall by removing sp3 first

You need to find the discs that came with your pc, if you cannot get your pc to boot up into windows normally it's the only option open to you unless you want to give it to pc world.

Put the disc in and restart your pc, when it says "press any key to boot from cd/dvd" press any key.

Choose "repair windows" a check is made to see what windows you have then an option to "repair current instalation appears" choose continue and that's it.

The process is almost completely automated but it may ask you to choose certain options and your pc will reboot several times during the process. Everytime it reboots it will again ask you to boot from cd/dvd, there is no need to press anything at this stage just leave it or the process will return to the begining.

If your daughter's laptop has an XP disc, you can also boot up with that (most of the time IIRC).

You can do it other ways but all require you to know what you are doing and are quite complicated to explain here.
I think your best bet is to take it to your nearest repair shop for them to sort. I know pc world are currently charging £30 to fix this issue.

Can anyone tell me how to restore my OS without the disk , would prefer to try myself befor i let pc world have it ( though if i have to take to pc world is it worth getting more memory added or use an external hard drive to save music and photos on)
