Please try to visit Dolgellau. Its near to Barmouth about 6 milesish ( i know thats not a word but it should be ) away. YOu can see Cader Idris, or climb it, it takes about 5 hrs up and down if u r a bit slow like me. At the bottom of the mountain there is a wonderful hotel called The Gwernan Lake Hotel. I have spent many an afternoon sipping cider in front of a real fire. This area for me is a little gem, the scenery is outstanding!0

Next time you come, try North East Wales. It's surprisingly lovely. The Clwydian Range - basically between Ruthin and Mold has wonderful walking and views. Derek Brockway did one recently.
North Walians are nice, but they do have a tendency to consider South Walian pronunciations as wrong. ( Eira = Ayra in the North, Ira in the South)

My OH & I are going to be spending a week in north Wales in August, hopefully with a trailer tent (if we can mend it before then!!). One of the weekends we'll be in Bangor but we might move around a bit for the rest of the week - maybe Anglesey, Snowdonia and also some of the rest of the north coast on the way in (we'll be driving down from Scotland).
I've had a look through this thread & will certainly look up some of the places!
Does anyone have any other recommendations? Looking to keep costs down but don't mind spending a bit if it's worthwhile. We are 2 adults, very "in" to industrial heritage (great little trains here we come! :j) and also other historical stuff and scenery. Will definitely visit the Snowdon Mountain Railway, Llanberris and Portmerion (I am a Prisoner fan, so it has to be done!). Any other "must do"s?
I noticed that I could get Cadw annual membership with my Tesc0 clubcard vouchers - is it worthwhile for a week in the north? I had a quick look on their website & it looks like a lot of the sites are free entry anyway?
Also looking for recommended campsites and cheap eats (pubs etc.).
Getting excited about it already :beer:0 -
sblhill, it is worth getting a Cadw card with Tesco vouchers. Some castles are still with NT, though.
You don't mention age, but if you are over 60 Cadw membership is free. You can get the details from their website.
Industrial Heritage - two brilliant places in North East Wales to visit;
The Greenfield Valley just outside Hoywell, Flintshire
Bersham just outside WrexhamMember #14 of SKI-ers club

I'd love to agree that Conwy castle is the best seeing as how it's my 'local' but to be honest it's not as big and hasn't got as much to see as Caernarfon.
However if you're going to visit Conwy there are other places to see as well as the castle. Sections of the town walls are open to the public and admission is free, assuming you can find the steps.
Also there are Plas Mawr and Aberconwy House. Plas Mawr and the castle are both run by Cadw and you can buy a combined ticket to visit both which is cheaper than paying seperately.
My one must do in Conwy, assuming the sun is shining, is to buy fish & chips from The Galleon or The Fisherman's then head down the Quay and buy drinks at the Liverpool Arms (in plastic glasses so you take them outside). There's no better way to spend lunch than than downing fish and chips and a cold beer on Conwy Quay.
