Unless I've missed something there is no provision for an individual to apply for permission/licence to own any of the 4 banned breeds! They are banned & that's that!

There is/was an index of exempted dogs but the only way to get a banned dog on it is to be found guilty of owning a banned dog & hoping the court shows some leniency, pretty much a lottery as the chances are the court would order it to be destroyed.

Now this is where it gets absurd....If I could convince my local council that I met all the criteria I could, in theory, be granted a licence to own... wait for it :).... a lion, leopard or most any animal you care to mention!

I think the DDA has its faults, but on the whole I think it's probably for the best that some species are just banned, rather than having a system of exemptions - in theory it should make it easier for the police/courts to enforce the law with dangerous owners and their dogs. Until recently, this meant that pitbulls were actually pretty rare, and done properly, the act could have meant that they'd become virtually extinct in this country. Unfortunately it hasn't been well policed or enforced, and it's now getting much easier to buy a pit (judging by the number of small ads I see in the newsagent window for "Irish Staffie"), which is resulting in more pits/pit crosses in the breeding pool. Many owners don't know/care that they're a banned breed - they just want a macho dog!

  • Nearly got bitten by an enormous Shire when I was 9 - he was happily licking my hand and the owner distracted me by saying 'look over there' at one of her other horses. I turned to look and he swept my whole hand into his mouth and started to bite.

Bless him, as I yelped, he stopped just as his teeth started squeezing my fingers hard and, whilst his owner panicked and started checking me for missing digits, he gave me a huge lick over my face.

No malice in him whatsoever. Everyone else was furious (how can they bring a dangerous giant horse in here, should have kept to ponies, etc, etc). I just thought it was my fault for not paying attention to him!
I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.

My German Shepherd girl always gets barked at by some small dogs who's owners always seem to think it is "funny"...

If one day she decides enough is enough and goes for one of those noise creatures that try to bite her paws.... should I let her do it?

    :p

My furry girl is sweet and calm, only interested in her ball (she is only 2.5 years old) and her walkies, does not look to pick fights.

2 weeks ago she was attacked by 2 Great Danes - I was shocked when my dog walker told me about that as to my knowledge Great danes are normally quite calm dogs. Nothing happened to my girl as everyone got hold of the dogs involved and managed to eparate them in time before any damage was done. Shall I start a petition to nab Great Danes?

The only time I was bitten by a dog was by a miniature dashhound , serious.... LOL

    Ban them cuties?

    Ahhhhhhh

Great Danes are generally dopey gits :) Gorgeous slobbery but dopey... :) However if there are more than one of any breed then there is a good chance of pack mentality setting in...
Round here the dogs that strike the fear into all dog walkers are 3 Italian Spinones... usually walked off lead - fine - but if you walk into a field and your dog is on a lead and these three come hurtling towards you it's somewhat intimedating - especially as 1 of the dogs is out and out aggressive! The other two wouldn't start a fight but WOULD join in... I've told their owner more than once that if either of them tries to take a chunk out of me or the dog I'll serve the offending dog with a hard kick and him with a legal case! He now grumbles when he sees me and moves in the opposite direction... sadly he intimidates loads of people round here. One day these dogs will come up against dogs that won't back down... and that will have more bite than them...
As for polo ponies... nope... never to my knowledge dealt with one of them :) Race horses, show jumpers, dressage beasts and even breeding stallions (around mares in season... that was fun!)
I've seen horses turned round but some horses are plain mean... :) Some are just cheeky... Not sure where shetlands fit in... ;)

jeez - havent you horse lovers come across any ex polo ponies? .

Yes, I've come across a few, poor ponies they often have a jaundiced view of people as they are often purely working animals not pets. Fed, watered, mimimal turnout to be horses and expected to perform.....regardless.They are usually TB too so intelligent and can fight back.

Anyway, back OT, :D just like horses, it doesn't matter how big or small a dog is, the owner should be in control - if your dog is aggressive, lacking recall, whatever YOU should manage the issues so that the dog doesn't get a chance to cause fear in others. That is the law and if you don't do so you risk losing your dog. No, it isn't easy and it's debatable as to it's fair but it's the way things are. There are a large minority of people who are very anti dogs in public anyway and every time someone has an out of control dog (whether it actually causes a fight or bites) you give them ammunition to ban dogs from even more areas.

BTW, I've just heard that a child was killed in Liverpool by a dog:mad:. Poor, poor child but watch the media over the next week or so to see what I mean by anti dog feelings.

When I had two akitas, it was always small yapper type dogs that went for them. If they were lucky they would go for the male, as he would not retaliate and just look at me as if to say "will you get this annoying thing off my neck please" if they went for the !!!!!, the outcome would be very different.

They both had disctinct characters, the male would happily tolerate children without any fuss, even with a toddler crawling over him and pulling his ears, the !!!!! would avoid children like the plague, and couldnt be trusted with them ever.

Why is the female name of a dog edited out?????

I'm guessing because in the past people have abused said word in a swearing context? ;)

from the responses on the thread i am even more convinced it isnt the breed as such - its the combination of upbringing, treatment, and the individual characteristics of the animal.
Yes - its so sad when a child dies or is harmed by an animal - but the only time it gets in news is when its a 'dangerous' dog.
take a look at the mentality of the owners - its not just the dog thats dangerous - these people who own the 'tough' dogs are gangsta mentality - but without the balls to actually BE gangsta! so they get these dogs and then they are 'hard men'. then some poor sod suffers for it.
jail the owners - and dont automatically put the dogs down (unless they have harmed).
