Got a feeling it was 2001 because of where I was working at the time. I ended up staying over and doing consequetive shifts as the snow was literally too thick for the car to move.

I think that's the worst it's been since I started driving in '99.

Looking at it now, it's going to tricky in the morning but will just have to leave at 5.30ish and hope they've also gritted the slip road that leads onto the roundabout for the M25, which is a nice downward, bending slope!

Think you and Sue must be right. Good god, where's the last decade gone ??????????

I look at eldest and ask where the last 16 years has gone.

I was young when I had him and now I am staring at 40! :D

T`was the early 80`s. Went down on business to the South West. Got as far as Exeter and the snow was so bad I decided enough was enough. On the start of the M5 there was a motel at Kenfig. Booked in for the night. Later even the lobby floor had people bedding down for the night. The police were closing it all off.

Got up in the morning and there was one lane open on the M5 to Bristol. Blow that says I. I will use the A303. Oh the police have closed it they said. Youngish feller as I was fired up the company Volvo, slipped onto the A303 and had the most amazing trip up it. Not so much a Volvo, more a powerful sled. Dodged the old Bill all the way up to the Kingsclear turn off. It was at that point that I lost control and curbed it but never mind. Carried on and got back to Berkshire in one piece.

Imagine the only car on the A303. Great experience.

Used to be ALMOST the only one often when coming out at weekends late at night. Lovely. Still sometimes only see a couple of others once on A303 very late. I've also been the only one on the bit of M25 I've been on..thats amazing, bet it never happens now?

    Lovely with it as well.
  • I don't know whether the snow in the 80's seemed better because I was young enough for it to be bigger than me, or whether it just doesn't snow like what it used to.

I was thinking tonight that I don't remember the last time I woke up and saw a really decent icicle hanging from my window?

Yeah, I thought I was 'old' at 40, when we had DD2. Now I'm staring at 60+ and thinking, 'It's a good job I know Graham.'

Graham's last one came along when he was 63. He's looking at 85 now(and still working!)

    Mine's bigger than yours though!:p

I have a feeling that 1946/7 was bigger than all of them, but I wasn't around to judge. I remember the adults spoke about it a lot though.

Early 1987, had week off work for holiday and decided to visit my nan in London.

Train left on time....then got stuck. No heating, no hot water, no food. Our train even appeared on the news, I always asked why they couldn't bring us some blankets and hot drinks instead of filming it.

Finally got to Liverpool Street after about 9 hours (supposed to take 1 hour 10 minutes) and promptly fainted as I got off the train..lack of food and heat I expect, recovered and got the train to Walthamstow.

Anyway, arrived in Walthamstow, got told to F off by a few taxi drivers when I tried to hail a cab to get to my nan's, buses had stopped running, so I did what any resourceful 16 year old would do....I called my mum.

Ten minutes later, my uncle came screaming around the corner of Wood Street almost causing a crash and picked me up.

God was I glad to get to my nans that day.

Coming home posed a bit of a question...my parents had been supposed to pick me up (also incorporating a visit to my nan) but they couldn't as they were snowed in! The road was finally cleared after a couple of days and they picked me up but couldn't stay as I was due back at work later that day...the size of the cleared snow at the side of the A14 (A45 as it was then) was immense...never seen anything like it before or since.
