    BarGin,

(This is just a quick in-and-out: I'm away for the weekend.)

You don't need to specify any major details on the Airport Express to extend your network.

You configure the Airport Extreme, manually, to operate on 802.11n at 5 GHz only (and to permit extension of its network). Then you just instruct, manually, the Airport Express to "extend the network" and specify what the network is called and what its password is: the Express then finds that network and configures itself to whatever it finds that network to be. If the network is operating on 5 GHz only, that's what the Express will configure itself to.

Then just click on the "Update" button to store the setting on the Express. When it re-boots, all should be configured to operate the extended network.

    Try it.

    (Back next week. :) )

Don't laugh at banana republics. :rotfl:

As a result of how you voted in the last three General Elections,
you'd now be better off living in one.

I don't mind arguing the toss with Apple, legally, over Mac-hacking a netbook when I have a spare and paid-for Mac OS X licence but HM Revenue & Customs are another matter entirely: they have draconian legal powers and are unwise to mess with or upset – let alone taunt publicly. ;)

Appreciate the concern Leopard but I'm pretty sure the tax free shops at the airport aren't really 'tax free' anymore, they offer goods at what would be 'tax free' prices but for travellers within EU they actually do settle up with the tax man and you're free to legally bring the goods into the UK on your return.

    Article from The Independant
    http://www.independent.co.uk/travel/news-and-advice/something-to-declare-shopping-at-heathrow-americas-love-airport-569906.html

Five years after tax-free sales within the European Union ended, airports operated by BAA still sell goods to European travellers as though they were VAT-free. For example, a camera costing £100 at High Street branches of Dixons should be available at the retailer's stores at Gatwick, Heathrow and Stansted for £85. Effectively, the shop pays the VAT for you, and you are free to re-import it into the UK at no extra charge.

Legal Ts and Cs of the 'Duty Free World' gatwick/heathrow shops:
    http://www.worlddutyfree.com/information/tax-and-duty-free-shopping.html

Shopping at “Tax Free Prices” is available at all World Duty Free stores after security control. “Tax Free Prices” mean that (where required to do so) the retailer will pay the amount of VAT due on the sale to the government (HM Revenue & Customs) and where they do pay the VAT the merchandise does not need to be exported. Hence Tax Free Prices are available to all passengers, regardless of where they are travelling to. The Tax Free Price is equivalent to the selling price of the relevant merchandise prior to the addition of Value Added Tax at 15%.

If you're travelling outside the EU it'd come under the standard £300 'other goods' allowance so you'd be ok as long as you'd not bought anythign too expensive.

Anyways back on topic BB upgrade date is set for 10th December hopefully will be testing my Wireless N gear over the weekend :)

Well so far so good -ish. got my BB upgrade switched over yesterday and no problems there.

    Initial setup

ADSL router <-wire-> Apple airport Extreme <-wireless N-> PC

gave no trouble with bandwidth (27ms ping, 11.8 down, 0.88 up according to www.speedtest.net) but am having issues with lag spikes of 4-8 secs 7 or 8 times an hour which is getting a little annoying, particularly for online FPS games....

think I've narrowed it down to the wireless as

ADSL <-wire-> Apple airport extreme <-wire-> PC, with apple wireless switched off problem seems to go away

    but

ADSL <-wire-> Apple airport extreme <-wire-> PC, with apple wireless switched on and lag spikes come back (wireless card in PC is on in both cases).

also seems a bit odd that although my PC card was sold as 2.4 Ghz (or is that Mhz?) only its driver (Win7 default which might not necessarily be the right one) seems to have options to enable 2.4 and 5 channels separately and the apple seems to be seeing connections on both channels when wireless is switched on.....?????? I suspect something may be 'fighting' betweent he 2 links so will keep fiddling (i seem to have lots of settings to play with :p)

will then start testing transfer rates to a networked drive and see if I do any better than BarGin

any tweaking suggestions welcome tho :)
