So what if they are? You have NO idea of why any single parent is on benefits...it could be for any number of reasons
We have a benefit system and lone parents are just as entitled to use it as anyone else. I'm sure the 5 years I was on benefits will be more than be paid back in the next 30 years of me working and for the 10 years previous to that.
Single parents have a job...bringing up a child. You never see folk looking down their nose at a childminder do you?
There's no shame on being on benefits if you are bringing up a child.0 -

*sigh*
Not only have I apparantly mentioned the OP but i've also claimed to know why some single parents bring their kid/s up on benefits!
Not bad going for 1 sentence eh
I responded to another poster who didn't seem to know the reason why SOME people look down their noses at single parents
I don't remember saying those were my thoughts?
This part did make me laugh though (feel free to quote me on that, it would at least be factual)Loopy_Girl wrote: »Single parents have a job...bringing up a child. You never see folk looking down their nose at a childminder do you?.

Evening,
I hope you are able to de-stress a little for the sake of you and your baby. Here is what I know.....
You will receive maternity allowance and then you will go onto IS once this runs out (after 39wks). I am not sure of the rates of these.
You will also need to apply for child benefit (£20/wk for 1st child then around £13/wk for any other children) Apply for child tax credits too. Whilst on IS your child tax credit will be around £63/wk and whebn child turns 1 it wil be around £53/wk.
You may also be eligible for the£500 maternity grant - ask at the job centre.0 -
Right, If you are claiming MA, you will be enetitled to WORKING tax credits and child tax credits, on top of your MA.
And also you will be able to get the surestart maternity grant as you'd be on the maximum award for tax credits.
If you rent I would apply for HB too as they disregard child benefit now which could make a bit of difference, also put in a claim for council tax benefit.:j Baby boy Number 2, arrived 12th April 2009!:j0 -
