while you are on maternity leave you are still classed as being in employment as long as its the paid part and not the unpaid part so you get the same as if you went to work. The first £3000 of smp is disregarded for tax credit purposes so I assume its the same for ma.

Even if you were on is you would still get child taxcredit on top of the £60 I dont know how much though.
As the OP only work 14 hours per week she is not entitled to claim working tax credits.
    *SIGH*

No one has mentioned dad yet.

Single parent or not, there is dads contributions to the upkeep of his child to consider.

It is £3900 SMP that is disregarded and the full amount of MA is disregarded for TC purposes.

Och understandable....first baby - we've all been there!! And being on your own does seem scary but do you know what? There are huge benefits...you decide how the routine works and there's no intervention. It's all your way and if your baby is anything like mine (who is a big 'baby' at 8 now!!) she seemed to know it was just me and her and we rubbed along just fine and it's still the same.

Whatever you say goes and there is no one poking their nose in with a 'helpful suggestion'!!!!!

You'll be fine I promise...I know it's easy for me to say that but honestly, take it from one that knows!!! I went through pregnancy on my own and labour and birth on my own (save for the midwife obviously!) and you'll get there...as for money, you'll manage somehow - we all do:D

And if anyone offers help -TAKE IT!!!! You don't get gold stars for being a supermum!! Everyone needs help and it doesn't mean you'e not coping;)

    Lotsa luck x

And if anybody looks down on you dont let them bother you! Its soooo much harder being a single mum ( my oldest is 6 and I was a single parent till 2 years ago), but for some reason as soon as you mention being a single mum you get looked down at. Its like you have a disease or something! And its a shame coz sometimes its not always your fault you are bringing up a child on your own, your partner could of died etc. But yet single mums all get treated the same! Especially young single mums like what I was! So just dont listen to anybody like that, Im proud of being a single mum to my son as it means that I done everything myself and he's the most inteligent boy I know! Hes the youngest in his class but the teachers say he is the brightest boy in the class and is always first to put his hand up to answer questions!
It may seem like its going to be hard but trust me its not! And with a baby depending on you for everything you cant let anything get in the way! Be happy that you have been blessed with a baby as theres alot of females who cant concieve :(
When your baby first smiles at you you will know everything is worth it!! And especially when they say "mummy" for the first time :D

Maybe it's got something to do with a lot of single parents relying on benefits to bring their child up?
