But her MA would never be less than IS...it's a Government benefit so there are thresholds hence she would not be entitled to claim IS whilst she is claiming her MA.

That makes sense. I've never been able to work out how they reduce Income Support for all sorts of reasons. There's never anything written on the WWW lol

No I think she is...we are talking in general now!!

DX is right...MA is more than IS and she will get her MA and then get moved on to IS should she not be going back to work. However had she not worked enough to claim MA then she would just have automatically put a claim for IS in.
  • Thank you for the replies.
Job centre certainly did not mention tax credits to me.
Loopygirl Im livid because I have stayed on longer than I needed to in a very bad job, my midwife has told me to go for an extra scan because the baby seems way to small for my number of weeks pregnant & I feel totally taken advantage of- I did not choose to be a single parent I have been dumped on from a great height. When I thought I would get £60 IS & around £78 MA to now be told I'll get one of those its just made me more scared for the future than I was already.

Yeah but you only get to keep £20 and then it is deducted £ for £ when you are a lone parent. So whether you work 4 hours or 15 hours, you would only benefit from an extra £20 on top of your IS.

How does that work if a single parent qualifies for IS and works, so gets the £20 ... and receives child support of £20 a week? Do they get to keep both £20's or just one?

Well you'll get your £78 plus all the other benefits that have been mentioned.

Hopefully the rest of the pregnancy will go smoothly. Like you I was a lone parent from day 1 and believe me, you'll do fine!! I'm still here to tell the tale!!

I don't know who told you you would get both benefits or whether you mis-read but try and calm down a little now and concentrate on baby.

btw, I also went for scan at 38 weeks as I was only measuring 34 inches. I was told this on the Friday and had all weekend to stew...she was fine and it turns out that as I am so tall, the explanation is that she had plenty room in my long torso!!! And she was a bouncing 7lb 14.5 oz!!

Try not to worry....easier said than done but at least you have this sorted now and you know where you are money wise.:D

while you are on maternity leave you are still classed as being in employment as long as its the paid part and not the unpaid part so you get the same as if you went to work. The first £3000 of smp is disregarded for tax credit purposes so I assume its the same for ma.

Even if you were on is you would still get child taxcredit on top of the £60 I dont know how much though.

    Both.

One os money from employment and one is CS so realistically if a lone parent got a wee 3 hour job at the minimum wage and an NRP paying then she would be £40pw better off.
