Shell Citi Card

  • Pathetic from Citi - rather than messing around cutting the cashback they should've just binned it in the first place.

Seems like most cash back credit cards are going this way - Argos stopped taking applications for theirs - I bet the decision to stop that one is just around the corner. If they can't make a commitment to run the deals for a decent length of time they shouldn't bother; it just wastes our time and makes us annoyed with them.

The other thing is whether applying for and cancelling all these cards will affect our credit ratings. I cancelled one recently, so I'll be keeping the Platinum card but never using it. It will likely cost them more to administer it indefinitely with no annual fee than they would've payed out in cashback anyway.

I'm quite confused about why they need to send me a new card, when all the seems to be happening is the cashback is going...
  • I too had a similar letter yesterday, relating to my easyJet mastercard account. They're dropping the easyJet bit and sending me a Citi Platinum mastercard. It also says that easyJet will be developing a new credit card in the coming months.

So i'm guessing Citi are trying to run cards without any promos on them, and so all the branded cards are going.

Shell Citi is a load of rubbish. They flagged up mine as a security risk as well.I am going to cancel.
  • Can somebody help.... have just read the letter again (was about to bin it!) and the FAQs sheet caught my eye...

    Bullet point 4 says...
How to I redeem available cash back?
Until 28th Feb you can redeem your available cash back by purchasing Shell fuel from participating Shell Service Stations in GB using your Shell Mastercard from Citi until 1st Jan 2010 and Citi Platinum Card until 28th Feb 2010.

Are they saying that I can use my new card until 28th Feb to collect cash back which will then be deducted from statement (in the same was as is now)

    OR

Are they saying that I have until 28th Feb to use/spend/redeem my cash back in a Shell fuel station??

I was always under the impressing that the cash back was just deducted from my monthly statement but it's the use of the word redeem in FAQs that has got me a little concerned that the £230+ of cash back I have is sitting there is waiting for me to use (redeem) it in a Shell Station.

Yes....you have till Feb 28 to redeem any cashback you are carrying.

That is right, the cashback is automatically adjusted when you spend in Shell. Any spend in Dec will accumulate cashback and will be available for use only in Jan and according to this rule you need to make a Shell purchase in Jan/Feb to use up the cashback i.e. redeem.

How do I spend my cash back then??

At the moment I just go into the Shell station fill up and pay with my shell card thinking that the cashback was just being credited to my account... what do I have to do to spend my cashback?

EDIT... think I just got it (sorry for being thick!)... say my account is fully paid off on Dec 1st putting the account to £0, then Novembers cash back of say £15 is credited to my account putting my account in credit by £15, I will then need to spend at least £15 on fuel in December to redeem it.
  • Ah well - It was good whilst it lasted - I drink a lot of diesel and switched other purchases to this card so saved £200 in a year.

There's not a lot else about and the price of diesel seems to be going only one way!
