Dealer offered me £350. Trade would sell it for £1000-£1200. People advertising (private ads) exact spec and mileage for £850-£900 on the classifieds. I'd take 650. 6 months tax is £68, isnurance is £14/mth.

Someone offered me 500 and gave me the 'buyers market' 'it's nearly christmas' 'everyone's skint' routine. I suspected they were a reseller

Then without checking the car out in detail you really do seem to have priced it to sell.

Because of this, stick to your guns when the haggling starts, be forcefull even. It's no good saying "I've priced to car at this level as I need a quick sale", and then letting them negotiate. Much more convincing to sell at the "right" fixed price, and tell them on the phone that the price is non-negitiable, that way they won't waste your xmas shopping time;), :T
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed

Any car will sell if the price is right, but it would have been far easier to trade to a dealer when you got the new wheels.

If you got an insulting offer, did you try a.n.other dealer? I usually try several dealers in other towns, it only takes a phone call, then use this to negotiate with my local dealer. In the current climate, most will bite your hand off to get a sale.

I've never found that it works like that. Yes some of the supermarkets will give you a fixed PX price against anything on their lot. Thats simply the base action price that they can off load the car for.
Most will only price your car when you have shown an interest in a specific replacement, and they can see what the new car stands them on the books.

The op was right in not PXing, a cheap little Micra runabout will sell soon enough:money:

  • Hopefully I'll be shifting the car soon.

Are there any other things I should consider?

    Take cash or cleared cheque
Send V5 off myself to the DVLA, in case they dawdle and get a ticket before the details have changed
Get them to sign a form saying when they bought the car, who from, etc etc

    have I missed anything?

Sorry but I've never sold a car before!

I'd also stick it on gumtree as well, with it being free. I've sold my last two cars on there very quickly. A five year old Focus sold in a couple of days and a nine year old Clio was off the drive and paid for within 24 hours of posting the ad. Both time people came from over an hour away!

Just price it right and be honest with the description and pics. If it is 'as described' then there is no real reason why someone who comes to view shouldn't buy it.

    Thanks for the tip.

I've sold the car using Gumtree. The ad returned plenty of interest, more than I expected. Pistonheads was a let down though.

Car went for less than I wanted but I'm glad to be a one car owner again. the buyer has got himself a cracking car for the money...but then I would say that! ;)

I think the Autotrader lot are living in cloud cuckoo land with their prices. Glad I didn't waste £20 with them when there's a plethora of free sites.
