hi all,
I was made redundant last week and made my first ever claim for JSA ( im 28 ) on the 16th nov which im yet to hear anything back from.
I was told i should get help paying the rent which is currently set at £64.80 a week, i live with my mum and brother who is a long term JSA and he pays a mere £7 a week. Can anyone tell me who i need to contact about this at the council? i did ask at the job centre but they seemed as lost as me
Thanks for any advice
and im now off for a interview!

most councils have a one stop shop where you grab a ticket to see an advisor ask them for the housing benefit forms

You wont get any help if you live with your mum0

Your mother needs to inform the council that there is a change in circumstances and that you as a non dependant are no longer employed, then she should get a reduction on her rent.hi all,

Make sure your Mum tells the Council asap and certainly within 28 days- it's a beneficial change (ie her HB should go up) so would not be backdated if she was late in reporting it.
Hope you find something else.0 -
rather depends what you mean when talking about paying "rent " to your mother. If you mean "keep" ie. your share of food and utilities, then that is what your JSA is for. If you mother only takes £7 per week from your brother; more fool her!0

You have misinterpreted the word rent.
This would be if you lived away from your home, ie in flat share.
What you pay your mother is bed and board.
You and your sibling should be paying a lot more than £7. a week.
If you lived as my child you would be paying £25 which leaves quite a lot for you as 'pocket money'make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -

£7 is the deduction made for non-dependents who aren't working, isn't it? It seems fair they pay that.
Are you saying you and your brother live there for nothing except the shortfall in HB though?
You surely contribute more than that to the household...?0
