Better to be late in this life than early in the next!

Someone who commutes daily on a bike will have no problems with that hill. The cycle path on the south side of the carriageway doesn't even have all those roads to cross. I am a recreational cyclist - quite irregularly - at that and i can get up Glentress without too much huffing and puffing.

exactly,so all the car drivers need to do is pause for a few seconds

Unfortunately drivers in this country believe wrongly that they have a right to drive at such poor standards.
Unfortunately, a great many road users in this country think they have NO obligations towards other road users. There are a lot of bad car drivers out there, without doubt. But there are a large number of cyclists who think they are entitled to ride how they like, there are a large number of pedestrians who think that wearing all black and walking in the middle of the road at night is their unalienable right. People should realise that they are responsible for THEIR OWN safety. When you are out on the roads, you have to do other peoples thinking for them. You pay attention to what's going on, and if it seems stupid, it probably is.

M/cycles for 10 years, cars for 13, bikes for 25 and pedestrian for 30.... and I've not been killed, injured or otherwise hurt because of other people, because I make sure I pay attention and don't take chances.

or the cyclist uses the cyclepath and there is no issue. His/her life is not in the hands of someone else. It's called taking responsibility for yourself.

What a stupid suggestion! Removing your foot off the accelerator and checking you mirrors takes and incredible amount of energy, time and thought, it's simply not possible to do that as it would mean being considerate to other road users. :rotfl:

Lets bring that Winston Churchill bloke back - he had the right idea about the road! ;)

In some cases a cyclist wouldn't be expected to be on the road, so a motorist may not see them with serious consequences.

Near me there is a main road into town and past UCLan university...there are cycle paths but one girl decided to use the road, cycled past a bus at a stop (stationary) and the driver watching his offside mirrors as he left the stop drove over her and killed her. He had no reason to check his inside mirrors as nothing should have been undertaking him there.

A very nasty accident indeed. A mate of mine was on that bus and said it was horrendous to hear and the driver was beyond consoling.

At night also it could be very dangerous to be where no-one would expect you on a cycle.

Better to get there tired and safe than not at all.

A bad example to kids too. maybe that's the worst part.

Sounds like that accident was caused by her inexperience and not realising that you should never undertake a bus (or lorry, or anything with a blind spot) not because she was on the road.

Cyclists have every right to be on the road. If motorists don't realise that then frankly they shouldn't be driving.
  • A cyclist is just as entitled to use the road as a car driver. People should realise that.

No. A cyclist is more entitled to use the road than a driver.

For all the cyclists who refused to use cycle lanes without actually finding out if the cycle lane is bad before they refuse to use it, or think the judge was out of order in the case ZootHornRollo mentioned the Road Traffic Act (amended) mentions:

    1. Dangerous Cycling - http://www.opsi.gov.uk/ACTS/acts1991/ukpga_19910040_en_2#pt1-pb5-l1g7

    2. Care and inconsiderate cycling - http://www.opsi.gov.uk/acts/acts1988/ukpga_19880052_en_3#pt1-pb7-l1g28
