hi techie peeps:hello:
having problems with the intwebby thingy signal reaching my desk top...
i use clearwire
which has to stay at the front of the house up stairs,,,connected to a buffalo unit,,,lap tops work fine and never get disconnected,,,,well not very often,,
but the desk top is at the other end of the house and has a small magnetic arial that sits on top of the computer,,,and im thinking if i could extend the Ariel to say 1mtr and put up high it would help with receiving the signal????
is it possible,,,,or even worth the effort
have to fetch oh from work so not back till 9-30
thanks in advance,,,

Should be, how to boost WIFI signal??
Something like this will help boost the signal.

Whilst not same router some useful advice below
http://forum1.netgear.com/showthread.php?t=6776
I ended up getting a new router came today its wireless 'n'
You can also get better aerials assuming router doesn't use builtin ones0 -
Some other options:
1. Use Powerline units to create a wired connection over the mains to the desktop rather than wireless. (No wiring necessary, they just plug into the mains).
2. Boost the signal from the Buffalo router in one of three ways:
- move it closer to the desktop as much as the cable will allow (or get a longer cable)
- if the Buffalo aerial is replaceable (some are, some aren't), a higher gain aerial will probably help, or
- make a cheap and (Blue Peter level) easy WiFi aerial booster from cardboard and tin foil - they do work! Try this first; it's effectively free, easy to do and likely to help. There's love in this world for everyone. Every rascal and son of a gun.

Powerline/Homeplug is the way to go, you can be connected within 5 mins of the postie knocking at your door. It's how home networking should be.
Wireless repeaters, signal boosters etc are terrible. From a technical point of view they use the same radio channel as your main router to boost signals....think of a room full of people all trying to talk to you at the same time and you're somewhere near. They are also fiddly to set up. No good.
N routers are great, IF...and that's a big IF you have an N capable wifi card in your laptop/printer/media streamer etc. Should that not be the case then all those big shiny badges on the router box in PC World are so much snake oil.

I agree with your powerline recommendation , but the above isn't quite true. You can set up an "extended service set" wireless network with two access points, the original router and the extender, each using a different channel. That's how my setup works, with a powerline link between the wirelss router and a Solwise wifi extender. There's love in this world for everyone. Every rascal and son of a gun.
