Hi ABH - actually no it didn't ask me to download a file, I take it you mean the WGA? But..I think that before I switched off pc after running the scannow I do remember seeing a Windows update security fix (you know the yellow shield update icon in the taskbar) - so I downloaded that and then rebooted.

Anyway nothing I've done has got my IE working at 100% but 99% is good enough :p most of the time! I can live easy with 2 browsers it's no big deal.

So would going back to a restore point mean having to activate again?

Shouldnt do, but I would do a restore point as mentioned above, well thats what I would do.

If your security settings are two high then IE will not run flash, did you try to change these settings?

I haven't changed the security settings - they are set to default Medium - so I just tried medium-low but that didn't change anything...Flash still won't run..

it's a puzzler this one for sure but like I say I'll give up on trying to fix it (I'll just use Firefox for Flash sites) as it's such a minor thing - but thanks for all your help guys. :T

No it's not the one that 'nags' you if if your license isn't genuine. It's the other one, the one which authenticates windows under such circumstances, they may have combined the two into one as I haven't done anything to any of my systems lately to warrant them rechecking my license key.

Well you're not alone. Almost everyone I know uses at least 2 browsers. I personally use Opera, Firefox and if the worse comes to the worse, I let Internet Explorer out onto the internet.

    As to your problem:

You've tried the usual 'why doesn't your damn program work as it should' here I take it? http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=tn_19166

    and here: http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=tn_19166#nocontent

    HTH
It could have been worse. At least source code's not combustible, or you can bet somebody at McAfee would have lit it.

    Erm..no I hadn't :o ! Until about 10 minutes ago..and guess what? :T It worked!!!!! :j

Thanks ABH!!! I think the "secret" was downloading and using Adobe/Macromedia's own uninstaller for previous versions of Flashplayer rather than the standard Add&Remove in Windows XP..plus the troubleshooter said I couldn't have any other open HTTP running whilst installing/uninstalling Flashplayer.

Well, that's where I was going wrong because I had Windows live messenger connected!

(I think that's every pc problem I've ever had solved now by the geniuses on this techie board! Thanks a lot everyone!!! )
