Go IE ==> tools ==> internet options ==> under Temporary Internet Files click settings ==> view objects, see if you see the shockwave plug-in is installed here.

If it is delete it and reinstall shockwave, if not remove and re-install shockwave via the add remove controls in the control panel

Thanks for that - I checked in the downloaded program files folder and it wasn't listed!?

Anyway I did remove from Add & Remove and went back to the Macromedia website and reinstalled (unticking Yahoo Toolbar!) and all seemed to go ok...but it's still the same as before - when i go to a website requiring flash it asks me to install it grrrrrrrr!

The only thing now is that in my Manage Add-ons currently loaded in IE -Flash/Shockwave active x's aren't showing - they're only displayed in the "Add-Ons that have been used by IE" dropdown - and although they are showing as enabled I can't seem to get them over to the the currently loaded part.

Thanks for that Quincy - I'll give that a go and post back if it worked or not.

Also I'm looking at a disc I got with my Windows XP magazine that has Internet explorer 7 on it thinking to myself "should I or shouldn't I?" .....

I would hold of for the mo as an overlay of IE7 still may not fix the issue but by all means go for it if all elese fails, hey did you try a restore point.

Tried both those IE repair methods - still same, so looks like Windows isn't seeing any fault with IE.

Haven't done a system restore yet as pc is only 3 weeks old (self build :D with no problems other than a graphics card drivers that you guys on here helped me solve!) there's not that far to go back!

I'll try that tomorrow - footy time now :money: thanks for the help guys!

No not a full restore just to a system restore point.

Start, Run (type) msconfig then click on Launch system restore and take the PC back to just before the install of Fire Fox, takes about 5minutes to do.

The weird thing is - after doing that sfc /scannow program to repair IE the next time I switched on PC I got a Windows pop up message (can't remember exact wording :

"Windows has significantly changed since it was first activated - you have 3 days to activate Windows - do you want to activate now?"

!!!!!! is that all about? lol I haven't made any significant changes to this pc in the three weeks it's been in existence - other than driver updates and software additions. And the XP disc is genuine brand new bought at same time as all other components...anyway I re-activated OK but am just wondering what could have caused this need for activation again?

So would going back to a restore point mean having to activate again?

As for my original IE/Flash websites not displaying properly - I give up! lol thanks for everyone's suggestions but I'll just use Firefox for those sites.

    The joys of computers eh?

It's probably down to the fact that explorer (file manager) and Internet Explorer are closely entwined in windows, the sfc probably updated a few files but they were older than the ones currently on your system. As such windows thinks (failed crc check) you've tried to circumvent the licensing restrictions and up pops that message. It told you to download a program and to input your license key again didn't it :)

    HTH
It could have been worse. At least source code's not combustible, or you can bet somebody at McAfee would have lit it.
