I just downloaded a mortgage calculator and just by inputting the £16 I have in the mortgage account, I can save almost £50 off the mortgage amount if I paid that off now. That has really spurred me on I can tell you.0

YB - the amount you can save by OP'ing the mortgage is mindblowing - seriously! If I could give anyone just ONE bit of advice it woulod be to stop thinking about doing it, or talking about doing it, and get on and DO IT! We put it off for so long and it's heartbreaking now to think how much further on we would have been! Another good trick is if you come to change mortgage deals (ie at the end of a fixed-rate deal) look to knock a year or so off the term - that helps too. We moved in where we are now and took out our mortgage in 2003 - meaning our MFD should have been August 2028 - At this point in time we stand at April 2021. that's a combination of OP'ing (but only since April last year) and ronding the term down to 20 years remaining when we changed deals in 2006.🎉 MORTGAGE FREE (First time!) 30/09/2016 🎉 And now we go again…New mortgage taken 01/09/23 🏡
Balance as at 01/09/23 = £115,000.00 Balance as at 31/12/23 = £112,000.00
Balance as at 31/08/24 = £105,400.00 Balance as at 31/12/24 = £102,500.00

Thanks EH. OH has always been against over paying the mortgage as his parents did it and were tight about everything because of it. I was chucking random facts at him last night and he understands why it's important to overpay.
We have our little pot for overpayments, but until we get on a great even keel with emergency savings and house improvements then the mortgage gets half of any extra I earn a month which I think is more than fair, OH can't moan we're scrimping and it's still a start.
We're currently sitting at Nov 31 and that's scary.
After the chinese last night I got some mince out of the freezer this morning so there will be no excuse tonight.
I am going to have a sort out today for ebay, it would be rude not to this weekend.0
