I agree there's lots wrong with the way Europe is run. But that doesn't mean I want us to be outside, on our own. I want us to be involved, fixing the expenses dripping tap, eradicating corruption, etc. I want Britain at the heart of Europe.

IMHO Its an impossible task, there isn't the political will to make changes.

If it were possible to "clean up" the system in our small country the task of cleaning up the EU gravy train would be 100x harder given the size of it...

The question I would ask Carol is "Given the length of time we have been involved with the EU how much Corruption etc has been addressed???.

If the EU commision want to be seen to clean up their act, why haven't they managed to get the accounts audited for the last 13 years.....

Last week 27 people had a nice cosy supper sat around a nice big table and between them decided who OUR President is going to be, we are then told its fantastic that we have a UK at the head of Trade (Baroness Catherine Ashton) who will give us a powerful voice in Europe........She has NEVER been elected at all......!!!!!! ,its not rocket science, that together with making Ireland keep voting until they come up with the right answer is Unforgivable..

They even got rid of the anti corruption comissioner because she caused waves.......Jeez:rolleyes:

All they keep doing is inviting more countries to join and in doing so makes the task even harder, They should have addressed the faults, put them right and then allow other countries in........

Its all very well saying we should be in Europe putting things right but where has it got us???

I agree, our record is pathetic, but I don't believe we should throw the baby out with the bathwater.

We can get that baby clean, somehow.

Yes, Carol I agree. People make me laugh when they go on about Europe being corrupt and undemocratic. We in the UK have an unelected head of state (the Queen), an unelected upper house of parliament (the House of Lords) and a wholly undemocratic lower house of parliament (the House of Commons) where the Labour party obtains a large majority of seats while only gaining 36% of the popular vote. And nearly all of our elected and unelected representatives, as has been proven in recent times, are well and truly on the fiddle. So if this is what constitutes UK democracy then give me Europe any day of the week!
  • If the Tories could get the hugely popular Vince Cable to defect, I reckon it'd wrap up the election (forget a hung parliament). It's a win-win, he has literally no chance of ever being in power if he stays with the Lib Dems, and the Tories get a hugely competent minister and a vote-winner.

    Unlikely to happen though...

Honestly - who cares? They're both different cheeks of the same backside and will spend far more time posturing and gas-bagging than actually DOING anything. One thing that always strikes me about Parliament and the Lords is how unbelievably outdated our political system is.

All the 'hear hear'-ing and the baying and all that crap at PMQs - it's just ludicrous that it continues in this day and age in the name of preserving 'tradition'. All these old duffers with their cloaks and right-honourable ladies and gentleman - for god's sake it makes my skin crawl!!!

A huge shake up and clear out is required and our country needs to be represented by ordinary people, not the silver spoons, cronies and gold diggers currently incumbant in the breeding ground for corruption that is Westminster!!

On balance, I quite like all the tradition.

What I'd like to see disappear is the feeling of 'immunity' that the place has apparently given to the gravy train element.

If they can manage to get that done and return even a small portion of the old idea of duty before self, that will be fine by me. I think the electorate can still be trusted to work out which ones are the 'duffers', old or not so old...
