This is an additional £62 billion to what had already been lent to the banks. The government was in such a panic they'd have agreed to anything to prevent melt-down.So 'pre-arranged' could have been as little as a few hours notice, if that. And if it was pre-arranged, the meeting took place without the knowledge of the tax payer or the shareholders. Which is part of the point I was trying to make - lack of transparency.
My original point remains and you have not addressed it yet. If it's all been paid back and everything is tickety-boo, then why not tell us the terms and conditions of the loan?
The very fact that the banks asked for the loan before they got it by definition means that it was pre-arranged.
In the same way that if you phone your bank and ask for an overdraft or loan then that too is pre-arranged.
Do you really think it would have been sensible for the government to have announced that these banks need such a large a loan risking panic and possible collapse of the banks, or are you just being disingenuous?
As for your final question, I neither know nor care. A crisis was averted and the loan has been repaid which is good enough for me.0 -
I've been reading the forums today with some interest, having myself incurred charges in the past. I've found the 'I'm alright Jack' smugness of some who claim never to have ventured into the red a little distasteful. I'm just reitterating what many have said before me, in that some people less fortunate than myself and many others have very little choice in the matter when it comes to overstretching themselves financially, and that individual cases aren't as black and white as some people are making out. I think it is important to remember that financial hardship can be intensely stressful experience, and that many cases of depression/suicide are often linked to it. To just dismiss anyone who has incurred charges as !!!!less spenders seems incredibly harsh. At least give those who have been pinning so much hope on the result of this court case a chance to lick their wounds before announcing how chuffed you are and how responsible you are with your bank account.
I agree with this poster whole heartedly! I find some of the posts horrible and just goes to show the mind set of some extremley smug and patronising people. Let's hope it never happens to you but you never know, you could also lose your job, you could also have family in financial crisis and use your savings to help out (but then again you are probably that selfish that the thought wouldn't occur to you)! I for one don't wish financial hardship on anyone, I don't hate the banks but there charges are dispicable putting many people in the red for being a penny overdrawn.
After this I know what I am doing if I can. I will try to boycott the bank and go back to the good old days of cash in hand. I will be asking my employer to pay me in cash, I will get a paying in book for my mortgage and every other bill. My savings will go into my local credit union and I will never ever work on credit again if I can help it. If I don't have the cash I won't get. I am one of the lucky ones and got my charges back - £175 for clearing a mortgage (thanks to Martin and this site) with one phone call. But I am so sad for all the people who did not and hope that something else can be done for you.0 -

I wish everyone who's had a problem with their bank would do the same thing and close their accounts and put their money into a Credit Union. You can't beat PEOPLE POWER!!! It would show these monster machines that we could live without them!!

Confused!! Cop out
To what?
I really don't know where you're going with this.
You made a fatuous statement that would have made a 1975 Miss World contestant blush to her roots.
I questioned your sincerity and quoted an equally vacuous song lyric, to which you asked if I had an answer.
So yes I'm confused.0 -
