and when you do set up a standing order, and the money that you expect to be in your account on a certain day isnt there, see how much of a charge it is for refusing a standing order!!

That's just it. On the dates arranged for my DD the money WAS there. It just wasn't there a week earlier when they went into my account for it.

    i am agreeing with you,

both on the standing order and DD issue.

the goal posts get moved all the time.

i rang lloyds a month or 2 ago to ask a couple of things....did you know that a DD is presented to the bank about 2-3 days before it is taken, if not longer? if this is the case and they know that you have "insufficent funds" do they not contact you?

i only let lloyds (i refusue to add TSB as i would have to add Halifax as well!) have my mobile number as i didnt like the fact that they rang me at home at 9pm at night, you know what they did? text me at 10.30 am every week, asking me to ring a premium rate number!!

I would like to buy a loaf of bread for a fair price, and electricity, and gas, and a plasma tv.... But we live in a competitive market place and have to pay the market rate.

Where else would the banks get the £2bn+ per year they were going to lose from?

where is the competitive banking market when they all charge the same fees?

Not going into detail, but none of them accept payment by SO. DD only, with all that that entails.
No best not. As they say, the devil is in the detail. Keep it vague

If you mean people will not accept payment by SO, that is entirely different. People can agree whatever terms of payment they wish.

In terms of paying a debt into court, you can pay by legal tender

Nope, no contact at all until the letter, email now, stating 'we have just lifted £38 from your account. Ta'.

I'm sure LloydsTSB see Barclays as a huge competitor ;)

Where is the competitive supermarkets when they all charge the same price?

Well the only situation I can think of where a SO would not be acceptable is when I worked for the council and customers had received a summons for none payment of council tax.

They could avoid the costs and go back on monthly payments on condition that they set up a monthly DD.

Other than that anyone was free to set up their own standing order with the bank.
Unfortunately some of those that did forgot to stop their payments in February, didn't set them up again in April, and didn't alter the amounts due when necessary. Those on DD had no such problems :T

Premier, the bottom quote you attributed to me was itself a quote from someone else.
    (a) use the quote function then!
    (b) so it's not just me who says Standing Orders still exist.

I possibly should say that the bank I have had all the problems with is RBS (another £38.4bn? certainly sir, no problem) I also have an account with Halifax, with whom I had a few teething troubles early on (1 my fault entirely, the other a bad customer writing rubber cheques), but they only charge £15 as opposed to RBS £38.

Bit of a margin there I reckon.
