If you get caught with dark tints on the front windows then the worst people to be stopped by are VOSA who will often issue an immediate notice banning the vehicle from any further use. Then you'll have to get it recovered back home or to someone who can remove the tints. Your breakdown service won't do it for free but will charge for it.

As far as the back and rear windows are concerned you can whitewash them if you want to!

Yup, the law is an !!! in that respect. You can wear as dark a set of sunglasses as you want with impunity. The thing is, you can always take dark glasses off, taking your windows out is a bit trickier :)

You can tint the front windows BUT it can only be a light tint (can't remember the exact amounts, but there is a level of light transmission that must be adhered to for front windows, maybe 60%) and don't even think about doing the windscreen. Everything behind the front seats is fair game.

I couldn't find a Guardian Tint in my area so I thought the local car dealer would use a reputable company, so I rang them and asked if they did window tinting? 'No, they replied, but they know someone who does it for them'. So I rang the said person and they're doing it for me on Monday, £150.

    ;)

  • I've had 2 cars done by a professional in Sheffield.
No problems and lifetime guarantee moonraker film.

One was £165 the other was £170 which had 7 windows in total.

B Pillar back is what you need - rear doors and back window.
Makes a real difference in summer as your car doesn't turn into an oven and smashing the windows is harder as the film holds the glass together.
    Looks cool too!

i was on the school run when i was stopped actually

another thing as to taking the vehicle off the road , the traffic cop concerned lent me a penknife and insisted i removed the film before going anywhere , it came off without too much trouble but had like a glue stuff remaining on the windows like you get after removing a lable from a jar , so bought 'sticky stuff remover ' from halfords to clean the glass up when i got home ,

  • As a motorcyclist I am always worried by dark tinted windows, as it increases the mental distance the driver has from those around them. Isolating them even further in their metal boxes. I awlays drive with the windows down 3-5mm as it allows me to hear motorcyclists, two tone sirens and even kids near when in slow moving traffic.

I think the law should be changed to force all unnecessary obstructions from the windows, like pray cd's (aka mirror candy), prat navs, I've been to xx beach etc.

Replace the air bags with a big steel spike, then they'll put their seat belts on.

This might get a few replies...hopefully some supportive ones.

wd40 also does the trick for getting the glue off too.

I thought the law was changed so that all the junk hanging from your mirror was supposed to be banned. Same with SatNav cabling et al.

In all fairness, getting your rears tinted is still safer than driving a van with no rear windows, since you can still see through the tints.
