Car window tinting

I'm thinking about getting my rear door windows and rear window tinted. Has anybody had it done, did they do a good job, any recommendations, how much would it cost me? I'm in Lancashire.

Did mine myself. Was a bit tricky getting the compound curve on the back glass. And taking the door covers off was a pain. Film came from Halfords. Did it again with the cargo cover on my pick up too.

  • I can recommend http://www.thetintman.co.uk/

They are a bit pricey, but they do take the windows out and fully fit the film, rather than some places that just fit the film in situ which ends up peeling away...

Swings and rounadbouts really. Look into untinted cars and you can see all the jackets, bags etc in the car. On a tinted car it's much harder to see valuables. One time I had to transport 36 laptops in the car with an invoice value of £43k. I felt much safer knowing that I was driving with them in a tinted car where no-one could see the branded boxes and being able to stop at services for a pee.

Well I'm pretty sure you'd be in a minority amongst casual thieves. I think casual thieves only break into a car if they see something worth the trouble.

or remove the coats and bags, then when the thief looks in he can see nothing. However after not being able to see anything in all the normal cars he sees a tinted one, worth a smash to see what they are trying to hide.

Very fortunate that with decent quality film they stick the glass together stopping it from being pushed in. although you can push it out if you have an accident.
my advise would be get a pro to do it I know the film costs peanuts but think about laying cling fim on a window without any air bubbles and you get the idea:eek:

  • hi , i wanted the windows tinted on my discovery , the local guy i found in yellow pages was a right jobsworth and wouldnt tint the windows as dark as i wanted , he even had the actual law printed up and laminated to give customers to read , what a !!!! , tried to convince me to have just a slight tint and wanted to charge a fortune ,
my next step was to look on ebay ..... i found a firm called guardian tints ....they came to me , were very professional , had a kitted out workshop in there van , and found them to charge a reasonable price

it was a few years back so not sure if they are still about

some time later i got pulled up and was made to remove the film from front driver and passenger windows as it was illegal apparently lol
but the rear is still limo black , which the local jobsworth would not do and the police were not worried about the rear windows when they pulled me up just the front , i suppose they like to look in on whos driving they reckoned it was because i couldnt see out , but what about when i wear shades ? surely thats the same or worse

  • bigblackdog, some stick to the law (its only the front windows) for good reason, if he did what you wanted and you got stopped not only would you get fined but the company who did it gets a even bigger fine.
The only way round it with most places is getting it done as a cash job - no paperwork etc....

If you do get caught with a dark tint on the front, they can take you car off the road there and then and it does happen.

I have had quite a few cars done in the passed and you do have to watch who you get to do it, in a lot of cases it is you pay for what you get, but lots of places will do a good deal for cash jobs.
