I agree with BigPoppa, it probably is a software issue. Its a bit like the complaints about pre paid credit cards. Some people say the 02 one comes up as an electron card, I have one with the mastercard icon, never had a problem paying anywhere that accepts mastercard. By the way if you cant shop at Tescos try Sainsburys Lol

Hopefully I should get my co-op debit visa next week

I spoke last week to a very tetchy co-op advisor who told me that the only card they issue with a cashminder account is a visa-debit card but that it was only a name change and that it only worked as an electron and unless tesco's etc changed their procedure to accept electron we would never be able to use it online to buy groceries! She actually said that it was NOT a true debit visa and never would be with a cashminder account! She was obviously fed up with explaining it - her attitude was totally different to any other co-op staff I've encountered who are usually lovely and polite and friendly!
  • Yeah CO-OP Cashminder is very good :money:. NatWest photocopied my passport and drivers licence and never got back to me after the interrogation. CO-OP never asked me for ID or anything. Just name, adress etc and that was it. The assistant in the bank said don't worry we are getting about 5 Bankrupts a week asking for the account. Had no problems with it. Been with them since September. Got a 4508 prefix and i use Tesco online so i don't know why some folks are getting problems
Ironically Barclays wanted to give me a basic account after i went Bankrupt and they were one of my creditors. Then again i was a good customer for 11 years.
  • Ahhhhh just thought maybe i had no probs with my CO-OP card because i am already registered with Tesco online for over a year.Just a thought.

Well I'm stumped - has anyone else with a cashminder visa-debit starting with 4508 got their groceries online with Tesco? Coz they don't seem to want my money! I'm wondering if cards that had tried before they changed the system have been barred maybe?I really don't want the embarrassment of them ringing and saying no again! I wouldn't mind if I was overdrawn but I wasn't!!!!!

Not tried the online service with Tesco, but I was in a store last night and went through the self serve till. Popped my card in and I had a good look to see what it came up as on the card reader and it said Visa, so don`t know what the hell is going on. Definitely something to do with the stores database not being upgraded. Have not tried it at any self serve pumps until someone reports some success with it..

Had a reply to my rant over email - from tesco.
Will post it on here when I get back home later on today.

Basically those cards work in the shop but will nto work with Tesco online (groceries or clothes or anything that one tries to order over the net from Tesco)

I've checked the order and can see this was due for delivery on 12th
November. The type of card you have used is flagged as a Visa Debit card and
not a Visa Electron as you are correct that we don't accept Visa Electron
cards online and if your card is indeed a Visa Electron, this should never
have been accepted when you placed the order and wasted your time.

If your card is a Visa Electron, I will need to report this to ensure that
no other customers have their valuable time wasted and I would be grateful if you can advise of which bank issues this card so we can have our systems
    updated.

If your card is Visa Debit then this would have processed through the
checkout following our usual security checks confirming this was a valid and active account. It is only at the time when the store have picked and packed the order will they then try to process the payment and will then be advised if the card issuer have accepted or declined this.

Please be assured that our stores can only respond to the message they
receive from the till system and we would never advise a customer we can't accept payment if this was not the message they received from the bank.

I have replied that my card is Co-op cashminder ... got the other email:

    Email 2.
    Dear .....

Thank you for taking the time to reply to me and I'm very sorry that your card was accepted online when it shouldn't have been.

I've spoken with our support team about this and they have confirmed that there can sometimes be an issue with this as the banks list the cards as either ordinary Visa or Visa Debit and this means the card will be accepted online. It is only when the store try to process the payment will this then be flagged as a Visa Electron.

Electron Cards were not originally designed for use online, this is due to the issuers insisting that the cardholder had to present at the time of the transaction.

Although this situation has changed and Electron cards can now be used online, regrettably at present we are still unable to accept these cards as a method of payment for online orders.
