  • It was working absolutely fine though... the only thing I did was start it up with a cd rom in the drive... which sent it to the windows error message and i started it up as normal.... and then went back to the error message... not too concerned about data as I do make regular back ups, this is a nightmare!
  • how do i access the recovery console??
What version of Windows do you have?

If DELL code is correct, then it is internal HDD failed, and DELL codes, are well known for being spot on, you only have to knock a laptop or drop it or anything for a number of components to become faulty, i would suggest looking on ebay, to see how much a hdd is for the machine, cause these laptop repair guys you find in the paper cost a fortune, and dell will want you to send machine in etc, and still charge loads

If it comes to that you can fit the replacement yourself by following the instructions here.

Why would you need a 'Dell' HDD? They don't even make the damned things!

Are you sure it's not still in warranty? A lot of Dells are sold with extended warranties- I've known people insist that it's only 12 months, and on checking the service tag on their website it shows 3 years! But if it's only weeks out, I would call Dell anyway and plead your case-if you ask nicely and don't demand, you might get lucky.
If you post the service tag here (7 digits on a sticker on the case) someone can check for you.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
