I have been advised to give her kitten food as it has more nutrients:confused: and it may help her to recover.......I have no problem buying it but i have never heard of this before!!

The kitten food is much higher in protein which will help her recover from giving birth much quicker. She also needs the extra nutrients as a nursing queen to produce sufficient milk for the kittens.

What is her current diet? It may well be that there's a kitten version available which will make the transition far less problematic for her.

If not, then Royal Canin, Hills and James Wellbeloved all do a decent kitten food which you can get at your local Pets at Home, and I'm sure they'll probably do a kitten version of their own label food too.

Good luck and keep us updated with their progress :D

PS I wouldn't be looking to rehome them at 6 weeks, that's far too young really. Between 10-12 weeks is a good time as they'll be ready for their injections then.

How exiting! Did you know she was pregnant? Six weeks is too young to leave mum, most rescues will recommend eight weeks minimum.

I only found out a month ago that she was pregnant!!
I can honestly say that the kids will probably want to keep the kittens! I dont mind tho......4 kids 4 cats....It will, im sure give them a sense of being needed and depended on which may help their development (of course i will be there to guide them and remind them of their duties:D)
Chameleon, she is currently being fed Dry food, with water being refreshed 3 times a day....I will be getting some kitten food this evening when i go into the vets to get her new BIGGER basket...and scratch pole and treats as she has done so well!!

I will post more photos up later when I get some more!!

The kitten foods I mentioned are dry foods so you can start mixing it into her usual kibble straight away and increase it until she's just eating the kitten food after a few days.

Exciting to hear you might be keeping all the kittens :D

Do remember to get mum booked in to be spayed asap too as she can become pregnant again soon after giving birth to these little ones. You'll have to ask your vet how soon he/she is willing to spay as this differs between vets. Some will do it almost immediately (high risk outdoor/feral cats are done this early) and some prefer to wait until kittens are weaned, so 4-6 weeks.

If you're keeping the kittens do remember they will need spaying/neutering at 4-6mths of age too to prevent any further unwanted pregnancies ;)

Thank you Chameleon.....will speak to the vet tonight about it, when I take the kids in to buy presents....just printed of adoption certs for the 2 wee ones as i would like to be able to refer back to them when the going gets tough for them!! (or they forget that kittens need fed and watered and loved and space)....they are 10 and 7 the other 2 are 12 and 14 and im sure they will enjoy being a keeper of a cat!!

The beauty of keeping home-bred kittens is that you will have known them all their lives and be assured they've had the best possible start in life.

My two elderly cats are mum and daughter and I also had their brother and mother/grandmother before them! Unfortunately their brother was killed in an RTA some years ago.
