Help with maths..(working out bill)

my childminder charges me to the nearest 15 minutes, so at £4 per hour is is always an exact number of pounds. So if I dropped off at 7.20, he charges me from 7.15, but if I drop off at 7.25, he charges from 7.30. As my hours are not exactly irregular, but subject to change by 10-15 minutes here and there, sometimes I win and sometimes I lose. He has a clipboard with times in/out and just works it out on a Friday from this and I sign for it. We have to pay a month in advance (estimated), so the total I sign for gets deducted from my credit balance. When it gets close to £0 credit, I give him some more money!
Not very sophisticated, but it seems to work for us...
That is a good way to do it..IF i had these kids regularly i would do the same but only have to worry about it for this short amount of time! .0 -
Gaby I have to say I find your thinking a bit strange...
The calculation is £131.67 so I will bill £129... The amount is completely odd and you are giving 1/2 hour for free there...
If you said I will bill £131 or £131.50, you can say you are rounding, but £129 has no connection with your hourly charge at all..
Ok at the end of the day we are talking about half an hours pay per week..a one off amount oo not a regular income every week of £2..it is not going to kill me to not get it..more than likely they will be late out of that week anough for me to make the money up anyway so i am really not that fussed. Again the original post was me and dh sat there..him doing it one way me another coming up with diff amounts each time..i just wondered what we were doing wrong/different that's all!..i wasn't criticising anyones opinions or workings out just mearly happy to now charge £130 as stated in post number 15!
Thanks0 -
So, just add the times up and calculate it properly then.

They have given me the times before they arrive though..unless the times they have asked for go over the ones i have been told then i can work the bill out before i sign them in/out as the parent wants to pay upfront. IF it is more i will then ask them for some more but it won't!0 -

Hmmm.... I don't know.
Would it be me on the other side checking the amount invoiced is correct and it gave me such a random number, I would probably question how do you calculate your fees as they don't make sense...
Or as most people would keep my mouth shut because you are the one loosing out however keep checking and think that you are a bit "simple" (not saying that you are!! It's just easy for people to make quick judgement).
It is not about being fussed, it's about professionality and professional would keep everything proper...0 -
How to make something so simple into something so complicated....0

I spoke to the mum last night saying i had charged her from 8.30am onwards as was easier than faffing with the odd 10 minutes..she was fine and understood and did joke saying they would more than likely be late than on time anyway. I also have to look at it from the point of view that they are paying me over £500 in total for 6 days work so if i am undercharging by a couple of pounds then so be it..unprofessional or not they know me and know i am not 'simple' and they can't ever say 'oh you know what xxx charged us to the exact pence when working out our bill for such a lot of money' can they??!! I am lucky to get the extra work and am happy with that..its all about give and take really in this job.0 -

Who is only being paid £4 per hour , or have i missed something?...............Just re read , childminding fees?
...and my third one was, who is paying by the minute. Most employers would pay at the very best to the nearest quarter hour.lol you just echoed by first thought.........and my second
Suppliers/self employed may charge on the basis of an hour or part thereof.
I heard one of the big burger chains were heavily criticised when they attempted to get their employees to clock out and clock back in should they wish to take a 3 minute comfort break."Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100 -
See if i was that bothered about the odd 10 mins i would do the rule of 'to the nearest quarter of an hour' but it doesnt happen often/ever really and so there is no need..hence why i will bill from half past and do myself out of not a lot!0

I'll try to be clearer.Hi..not sure why Ofsted would say anythign about me undercharging?! have i missed something there? all they are bothered about is that i log the kids times in and out correctly..which i do.
Again HMRC?? i am not overcharging but underchargind so why would i get into trouble over this?
If the child is with you from 8:20 but you charge from 8:30.
Your records will either show they arrived at 8:20 or 8:30.
If your records show that they arrived at 8:30 and ofsted found that they were there for 10 minutes not being logged then they may pick you up on it. [From your reply it sounds like this isn't the case, but I didn't know that.]
If your records show that they arrived at 8:20 but your accounts show that you have charged from 8:30 then HMRC might think that you are charging that first 10 minutes but pocketting the difference without paying tax on it. I know that's not much, but they might then decide to investigate to see if there are other hours that you are working and not declaring, etc. Again, I'm not saying that you're doing that, but I'm sure you'd rather not be investigated!
I think you're basically doing the right thing.
Log the hours as from 8:20 then in your accounts make a note that you "rounded" it to 8:30 for simplicity.0
