And once she's handreared 8 pups for 8 weeks I doubt she'll be in a hurry to do so again :rotfl: it's a HECK of a lot of hard work! She might welcome a night of baby sitting the 3 year old at the weekend if you can to be honest ;) She'll be knackered if the mum doesn't take over feeding all the pups :)

Some dogs are just lousy mothers!

I had a chocolate Lab that was bought on "breeding terms" from a show kennel. The sire was chosen by her breeder. She really didn't act at all maternal with her first litter, she preferred her human company to annoying, hungry pups. The litter had pups with hugely differing birth-weights and we lost quite a few of the tiny ones. The others were weaned early.

Hoping her (and our) inexperience was to blame, we bred from her 2 years later using a different stud dog. Again the pups were all different sizes - the smaller ones were too tiny to survive really, and again she neglected them all at every opportunity.

Needless to say we never attempted to breed from her again. I don't think she ever saw her puppies as her babies, they were just little squeaky nuisances that she had to share her home with for a few weeks!

Thought I should post an update...

The mother is fine with seven of the pups now, washes them and feeds them etc. But the little one who died a couple of times she doesn't want to know, and has even snapped at him. He is being completely hand reared and kept seperate from the others. My mum and sister look knackered so they are glad they aren't hand rearing the whole lot lol.

Sadly, when a b1tch acts like this towards a pup it's usually because she knows there is something wrong with it and the chances are that the pup won't make it in spite of anyone's best efforts. Your sister should prepare herself for this eventuality.

And it's always harder when you hand rear, because you get to attached to them.

    Good luck little Oliver

Thank you :) yep we are aware that the worst could happen, but since dying twice on his first day in this world he is doing quite well now, feeding well, toileting well hehe. Tell you what, they smell sooo good and their breath is like heaven lol.
