My sister's dog is having pups :)

Quite excited, my sister's dog is having puppies (well might be all done by now) My mum told me she had been up all night and there were 5 pups by 930 am. Only I got a text from her later on saying one pup had died and my sister was in tears :( I hope the others are all ok. Apparently the poor dog got so tired the vet had to give her an injection to speed things along... she hasn't had pups before. Got my fingers crossed and looking forward to seeing the dear little things :)

Just heard from mum again - they managed to revive the pup. There are 8 of them but the mother won't let them feed :(

Hope your sister has a lot of time if mum won't let them feed... I think it's 2 hoursly feeds 24 hours a day for the first while if memory serves me right (thankfully been a few years since i last had to emergency foster a wee one that had been rejected ) and with 8 on her hands she'll just about finish one feed be able to have a cuppa before she has to start from the beginning again - it's tough with 1 or 2 - but 8!

Tell her to get some formula from the vets in case mum ccontinues to refuse to feed the pups!

And not meaning to be negative but please gently prepare her for possibly loosing at least one pup... (No doubt I'll get shot down for not being fluffy on this thread too... but) It's more common to loose pups if they are not reared by mum and the fact one of them already has had problems means it might have an underlying problem...
If she is going to struggle with this litter then remember once a b!tch rejects a litter there is an increased chance she'll do so again if she has more litters. Please advise your sister to have the dog spayed... I know a couple of "professional" breeders and only two years ago one of their b!tches rejected her pups, they tried her with them again and she went for them so was seperated from the pups immediately. Thankfully it was a small litter of 2 and she didn't manage to harm them but they decided that she was not suited to be bred from despite Crufts wins and she was spayed and although they planned on keeping her someone who had a pup from them before loved her and offered her a home.

I have no doubt I should be fluffy and all positive, but I think it's really important especially as it sounds like your sister isn't an experienced breeder...
Not that I am - I've just been one of those people who end up with the results of accidental litters and so on to care for in an emergency.
If she does try mum back with the pups then tell her to be VERY careful - slightest sign of aggression from mum make sure the pups are removed immidiately because she may try to kill them... :( and tell her to not leave them unattended for the first 24 hours to be sure mum bonds with them even if it seems initially to be going well. I would hate for her to come down in the morning to find the worst had happened :(

Thanks for the replies. The dog is a KC registered golden retriever, my sister has kept them for years but this is her first attempt at breeding (everyone has to start somewhere right) and has just been unlucky I guess. I have not heard from her today but had an update last night, apparently the weak pup came out backwards so we are assuming he was a little starved of oxygen? There are 5 boys and 3 girls :j
Mum hadn't made any attempt to clean them, so my sister and my mum were having to do it themselves, they managed to get 7 of the pups to feed eventually but had to force mum to lie down so that they could (she isn't showing any aggression, soppiest dog ever but she just wants to get away from them :( ) and the weakest pup was being fed by syringe.
I doubt she will want to get her spayed but I guess that depends on the outcome of this, if she doesn't want to breed her again then I am sure she will get her spayed.

Just waiting for an update now...

Edited to add: spoke to mum on the phone last night and the thinks most of the problem is that the mother has not had enough chance to bond with the pups, due to going to the vets three times (I don't know why three times yet only that the first time was for an injection to speed things along) Not entirely sure the vet made good decisions I mean, putting a dog in a car (still giving birth) with newborn pups in tow seems like madness to me, but I know very little about this stuff.

  • Its probably been a bad experience for her and she could be blaming the pups for the 3 car journeys whilst having the pain of labour! PND maybe?

Ive no experience with puppies but Im sure she will come round eventually, bit of love, support, cuddles and some bonding time :)

Even the nicest dogs can struggle with being a mum. My ex's dog (the most loving mongrel) kept trying to move her pups into the hall from the bedroom where she gave birth, she would feed but she always seemed desperate to get away from them when I came home from work, then as soon as we got around the corner she wanted to come home. She also started pooing and weeing on our bed when they got a bit older, she was very distressed. :(

Could the vet not have made a home visit? This would never have happened when I was in practice. We'd have attended the poor dog in the comfort of her own home! I'm guessing it was one of these new OOH service vets?!
