Two of my sons are disabled, one has Autism(although one specialist won't recognise him as being autistic as he can have a conversation with someone).

But how does he interact with them? It is possible to be autistic and talk.

I have partial seizures and tonic clonics and the amount of people who think once I have had one I should just get up and carry on as normal.

What the hell? You can't just fit and then carry on as normal.

    Hi Sandy71

I think the reason it took them 14 years to find a drug that worked was they weren't really looking very hard between age 6 and age 16. They were trying not to leave me 'dopey' from the drugs and decided that having fits was the lesser of two evils. It was only when I was studying for my A levels that they started making an effort to find something that worked. So I suppose it only really took 4 years once they started trying. And I had a lot of bad side-effects to the drugs which probably made it harder.

The thing I still don't understand about parent's not letting their kids come over to my house in case they 'caught' it / saw me have a fit is that they were going to school with me every day. After all, school didn't have some kind of magical qualities that prevented seizures!

*SIGH* People so often don't engage their brain before making these strange decisions.

You'd be surprised how many people think lupus is contagious, too.
If your dog thinks you're the best, don't seek a second opinion.;)

I didnt have much knowledge about the aspie spectrum, until I worked with a lady who was an absolute genius, her aspie traits enhanced her skills, once I had adapted my own mgt style to suit her needs, we got on like a house fire and worked very well together, and for certain roles, I now know that certain autistic traits are hugely beneficial to my company.

Now I run my own company I have two members of staff who are on the spectrum, and they are invaluable, I pay them over the industry standard salaries as to lose them and replace them with normals would be a disaster.

I had someone once tell me that IBS is "not a disability" - yeah, because wanting to vomit all the time and needing to be near a toilet is really fun. Oh, and I have to check absolutely everything to make sure it doesn't contain wheat. (some companies are stupid enough to say "doesn't contain wheat/gluten" and then on the ingredients list, it says "wheat flour")

I worked for a supermarket where the staff all had to under go training for respect of the person . They were given role play as method of learning , after all it was pointed that 1 in 4 of the people in the U.K. has a disability problems both bodily and mental - I am deaf in one ear - Also did a period in the caring for people- For all the posters on this thread - No one better than God - Its just that they think that they are better !!!! Just think positive that you are a winner and go for it - after all David Beckum is in our big club - Best of luck.
  • I'm afraid most people dont see a disability unless you have a limb missing, use a chair stick etc. Anything hidden - forget it>

Heard a great story today of a teen doing a course and a part was looking at disabilty. This person is almost totally blind. They have been told they have to be part of group and experience what its like to be blind by wearing a blindfold. Errrr so what will they learn. They already are blind.

got my own back today in the car park of Tescos, parked up in the disabled bay, older couple walked past and gave me a filthy look, even though i hadn't moved out of the drivers seat, so shouted out, Yes it's ok i really am disabled :T

I was amazed by the filthy look, i just couldn't help it
Life is about give and take, if you can't give why should you take?

I know people who use wheelchairs; but have both legs. They've been told they're too "young" or "pretty" to be disabled.
