That's a bit harsh! He can retake the exam, perhaps in the autumn. If these were A-Levels and he was relying on the grades for a Uni place it might have been a bit different.
I'm sure many of us have been in positions where raising £110 would be impossible - and we don't all have credit cards.0 -
You cannot expect people to believe that after being a member of these boards for so long, that there is no financial education going on to those who post. Glasses are not free.0

I thought Martin advocated spending/investing spare money wisely as much as advocating those with money problem getting out of debt?! I have savings, I guess I'm not welcome here.
If I had no money I wouldn't rock up at Specsavers expecting a free pair of specs, I would spend the night before scraping together the money. Definately that over drinking.0 -

I actually think it flipant to say he can do the exam in the autumn. I have a son doing GCSE. The children have spent two years studying for these exams. Kept up with coursework in almost every subject. Felt pressurised to perform at their best at this moment in time. Added to that, a lot of schools require a certain level of attainment to go on to do A levels.
It is a stressful time for them and as parents we need to show that we are there to support our children. The only way we can do that is to do what we can when we can - helping with revision, food on demand, ferrying to exams, consoling words - whatever is needed. We also need to show by example that this is an important time for them.
To say they can just do the exam in the Autumn doesn't support them at all. It devalues the ethos that education is important. They have been studying hard for this now, what message does it send if you say do it another time? What message does it say if you don't find the money for glasses? That you don't care for their education?I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. I can't believe poor mandi's being attacked on this thread. She did her level best to contact her ex who was unavailable; if she'd physically had the means to pay she would have, and you only have to read through this thread to see how she tried so hard to help her son. Shame on you for attacking her.The ability of skinny old ladies to carry huge loads is phenomenal. An ant can carry one hundred times its own weight, but there is no known limit to the lifting power of the average tiny eighty-year-old Spanish peasant grandmother.0

I think the comments indicating that the OP has some how failed her son by not spending £110 on a pair of glasses is unwarrented and unfair.
None of us knows the OP's circumstances.
But hey that's only my opinion.2014 Target;

Mandi, I sympathise with your DS's situation and believe you did the best for him that you felt you could. (I sympathise doubly as I'm -4.25 in one eye and -4.75 in the other! I can absolutely imagine the panic I'd have been in iof that had happened to me during GCSEs (now 12 years ago :eek:))Operation Get in Shape

I absolutely agree, there is no way i would be able to find £110 at the drop of a hat, and not from my ex either as he wouldn't even asnwer the phone to me.0 -
You dont know it may be that Mandi's credit card is maxxed out. It may be that her family's security would be put at risk if she got into more debt. How can you criticise when you dont know her situation? £110 is a lot of money if you have no way to pay it off. Its okay to get out the credit card but a month later there is going to be a bill and what if you cant afford the minimum payment? Exams are very important and it sounds as if Mandi would have bought the glasses if there was any way she could have.The forest would be very silent if no birds sang except for the birds that sang the best0
