Don't some supermarkets sell reading glasses? Can you ask around for any friends/family that may have a similar prescription?

Don't panic. Perhaps ring one of his teachers?

24 hr supermarket, see what he can read through.

    What's his prescription?

Might be able to rope in a last minute scribe...like they do for blind kids?

It will be unlikely that he will be able to take it later due to exam regulations. However, you should talk to the school as he may be able to have someone read to him and possibly act as a scribe. Talk to the examinations officer, possibly a deputy head, his year head or the SENCO.
Don't worry- there are people in place in schools to help with situations like this.
Hope it all goes ok. Let us know how you get on.

Thank s eveyone, weve already rriedthe supermarkets, but the lenses in are both different.. and hes a little short sighted.. ( like his mum)
Exam is at 9, Vision Express is virtualy across the road from shcool, thought if we could get him in at 9, and out with the new specs, into school before the exam finished, that they may allow him to sit it..
Whats a scribe please?? Never heard of one. Is it someone whoa asks the quesyions, and writes the answers.. Just guessing, forgive my ignorance please... (-:

Yes, that'sexactly what a scribe does.

I'd be tempted to buy 2 sets of glasses, hack through the middle and tape the right lenses together.

But if he's only a little shortsighted, he may be ok for close range reading for a few hours!

It is possible to get a scriber. I suggest you go with him to school in the morning...as early as poss to speak to the headteacher or head of year.

Try not to stress out so much...the more u stress..the more your son will stress...and the more it will affect him tmrw.

    1) check his prescription - 24hr supermarkets or 24hr chemists (or ones that open 7am!) they all sell reading glasses cheap. So take him along and see which one he can use to read ok.

    2) if you cant find a pair of glasses at the last minute - speak to his headteacher and see if they can hold your son under supervision in the morning - which gives you a chance to go to his opticians to buy some ready made reading glasses (the ones that they sell off the rack)....then once you get back to the school he should be able to do the exam since he's been under supervision - and there's no way he could cheat. A friend of mine managed to do this for a similar reason. She had to sit in the staff room with a teacher while the other students were doing the exam. And then she got to do it a bit later.

I recommend running to the supermarket!
    Good luck

oops u guys too quick for me!

I'd buy 2 glasses and go the opticians first thing...they should be able to pop the lenses out for u and put the 2 right ones back into one frame.

mandi love, take a deep breath and STOP panicking!

i know it may feel like the end of the world now, but the school will be quite used to these last minute disasters which make you feel like all is lost.

it isn't, and i have every confidence that all will be fine.

phone the school first thing in the morning, and explain the situation. they may agree that you should send him to get new specs/ have his current ones fixed. it is possible that they will send a 'chaperone' from the school to accompany him, and make sure he does not come into contact with the kids who have sat the exam.

your lad should then be able to sit the exam when he can see again - they may make him wait until the afternoon exam session (eg 1.30/2pm) and keep him under their supervision until that time, so i'd recommend you make him a packed lunch/ give him dinner money.

alternatively, as previously suggested the school may provide him with someone to read, and perhaps write on his behalf. the 'extenuating circumstances' can and should be duly noted for the exam board to take into consideration when marking his paper.

now have a cup of tea (or glass or three of wine ;) ) and chill out - it will all be fine, i promise xx

May also be worth either leaving a note on the answer phone of Vision Express or a note through the door explaining situation and the prescription. Hopefully someone may get into shop early and may be able to start before the shop officially opens.

You may find he is able take his exam later than day if he is kept seperate from those who have already taken the exam. It will all depend on the rules and the staff available. I remember when I was a school that some pupils had to be kept in a room with a teacher because two of the exams clashed, the majority did their exam in the morning and they took it in the afternoon.

Try not to panic, it is never quite as bad as it seems.

    Good luck.

This site never fails to amaze me at how fantastic people can be when you need advice.. So give yourselves a big pat on the back..:T :T

Will take him to school I think, See what they have to say.. A chaparone as Parvlov suggested would be great, means we could have him into the opticians for 9, and hopefully out by 9.30.. He does need a presciption, and I have a copy of one from November, so will not need to do a retest, just a case of fitting some lenses into a frame for him...

    Eee Kids eh!!!:D

    Thanks again,

Will let you kind folk know what happens...
