Ah *remembers the days of whatnot* :)

I think I agree cazz, unless either of you are with an employer who would be making contributions to a scheme on your behalf, but only if you do it too. In that event, I think it might just swing it in the other direction for me, but I think I remember that yours and OH's work don't do that?

OH doesn't have any option for a pension scheme through work at all, he would have to organise his own, and my employer offers a pretty feeble pension in that whatever I decide to pay in, they'll top up by an extra 11% of that, so if I pay in say £2k a year, they'll put in an additional £220, it's something to do with the difference in National Insurance payments or something, the company pays out the same figure it's just split into different pots for me.
To be honest I don't think it's worth it for now and I'd rather concentrate on clearing the mortgage, THEN we can think about putting aside for pensions etc and will have a bit more financial freedom to do it.

I'm not used to having "spare" money, it's a flippin mine field trying to decide the best place for it!! Thanks for your help though folks, OH shouldn't take much convincing, he's so laid back he's practically horizontal so he'll just nod and agree with whatever I suggest is best. Love him to pieces xxx

Cazz you have a choice really:
    - pay into your pension, and get the employer contribution now, but get taxed on your pension 35 years later - if the contribution is large enough this is hard to resist
    - pay tax on your earnings now, pop it into an ISA or whatever pension equivalent you use and then use it tax free later (assuming government still do tax free in 30 years) - but with the flexibility to get it when you want
    - paying off your mortgage is comparable to an ISA in that you saving interest which you have to pay out of taxed income and loan rates are higher than savings rates typically - but some lack of flexibility in that your money is more locked away

(btw we found out what was causing the kids and we stopped that right away :rotfl:)
I think I saw you in an ice cream parlour
Drinking milk shakes, cold and long
Smiling and waving and looking so fine

We've got a small stash of savings (the recommended 6 months worth) so we have a contingency fund should we need one so in June when our monthly saver account matures we're gonna start ploughing all we can into paying off the mortgage.

Weezl - so sorry to hijack your thread temporarily!! Wasn't meaning to be rude :o
