I colour my own hair and have done since I was about 14...thats errrrrrrr 39 years , I can't remember what colour my hair should be, well I know what colour it is now, very grey
It now varies, usually blonde in the summer and brown in the winter.
The hairdresser I have now often discusses my hair colour with me, she never makes me feel I should have it done there, mind you last Saturday she said had I thought of a reddish shade.........(see next paragraph)
Up till now I think I have only ever had one disaster, when it went a shade I can only describle as 'sainsburys' orange. Paniky phone call to my friend who was a hairdresser and she told me to get an ash blonde to tone the red down, had to bribe my son to go and get it for me, and guess where was the only place open at that time of night, yep you're right Sainsburys :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:whoever said laughter was the best medicine has clearly never tasted wine

I was paying a neigbour about £40-£50 for cut and blonde highlights every few months but she has just moved
. Not sure what to do now as home dye never really worked for me. I guess I need to get to the college and get booked in there. My job is a bit more flexible now so should be able to fit it in. I have paid salon prices before but I just cant excuse that these days. It not grey I covering (just yet anyway!!) just a mousy brown dull colour. :jMay 2013 new beginnings:j0 -
I dont go to hairdressers - so i am mousey brown with a good sprinkling of grey - so what? my hair is longish and i wear it in a messy bun. trim the ends myself when they look split. which isnt very often. I really dont care! its clean and tidy and to be totally honest - I am no beauty at the best of times.
but back in the day when i did care - i cant believe the amount of money i paid hairdressers - then my bro married one and i learned just how much they pay for supplies. even allowing a good hourly rate for their expertise - its a total rip off!!!
er - my son used to do my hightlights until i got fed up of them - cost me about 4 quid for the highlight pack! and he did a great job! but - if i did them myself would get too impatient and not leave the stuff on long enough - result - the ginger tabby look!
get a mate in to do the fancy stuff - and have patience and leave it on long enough!0 -
I'm in my mid-fifties and have naturally blonde hair with grey coming in at the temples. I've never coloured my hair before but I bought a blonde hair colour some months ago to hide the grey but haven't been brave enough to have a go yet. I'm afraid of having chosen the wrong shade and don't want to get roots that need to be retouched. Is it OK just to bung the colour all over again the next time round?0

I started going grey at 18, and I think it would be pretty much completely white by now, it also grows v. fast so I have to dye it myself otherwise it would cost a fortune, and definately not ready to be a grey old lady yet, I'm still in my 30s!!!!
Not had any disasters recently, although I tend to stick with the same sort of reddish brown - I am a brand tart though and buy whatever is on offer (not boots own brand - it doesn't work, do they even still sell it?).
Had it coloured at the hairdressers for my wedding and I have to say it did look better than my home jobs! BUT it cost a fortune - apparently they had to charge me extra because my hair is so long they needed extra dye!
As for a haircut - I can't actually remember the last time I had it cut - did book an appointment for my birthday but discovered that morning that DD1 had head lice so cancelled in case I had them too:eek: Can you imagine anything worse than a hairdresser telling you you're infested:eek:0 -
I do my own hair with a friend's help, we make a night of it every 2 months and it is lots of fun. It's black with pink highlights.
I also cut my own hair, I may go to the hairdressers once a year just because it's nice to be pampered but I never pay more than £20.0 -
I went to 3 different hairdressers and they didnt do what i asked and it cost a fortune  Anyway found this on Boots site and thought it might be useful for someone http://www.boots.com/en/Colour-B4.-Hair-Colour-Remover-by-Scott-Cornwall-hair-expert._1000978/

I started experimenting with hair dye when I was 14.....I went blonde, only it was more of a brassy orange because me and my pal didn't do it properly. Fast forward 30 years and guess what colour I am today? There are some things that people just don't seem to learn.

Given that we are still having to spend money on the house, there's little left in the pot for niceties. I have too many grey hairs now to leave so I have to dye my hair fairly regularly. I get it cut at the hairdressers but I couldn't afford to keep getting it coloured there so I do it myself. Most of the time it works out ok.....I was purple last week. I like to ring the changes occasionally.
Today, I bought one of those kits that have the base colour and also a little pot of a lighter shade so you can paint on highlights....and that's where I've come unstuck. The base colour is fine......I should never have messed with the highlights.:o I now have a bright orange skull cap look going on. I obviously made the sections too wide and they've all blended into one and I think maybe the dye reacted with the purple that was there already which is why it's a truly lurid shade of orange. :rotfl:
I'm only laughing because it's that or cry. Loudly.
Thankfully I only did highlights on the top so I can scrape it all up into a bobble to hide the colour whilst I run out to the chemist first thing in the morning to get a cover up.
Just curious how many people dye their own hair and how many go the hairdresser? If you get colour at the hairdresser....do you treat it as a 'must have' or a nice luxury? Can you afford it easily or do you have to budget?
I've had too many disasters with home kits - and now always get it done at salon.:eek:
I think 'grooming' is an essential, and luckily my DH agrees with that so doesn't moan about the cost of hair, nails, waxing etc.,;)

You can tell a lot about a woman by her hands..........for instance, if they are placed around your throat, she's probably slightly upset.

I bought an Australian version of this from eBay once. It worked brilliantly but I have to admit to some serious panicking betweens steps as my hair was all shades and went like straw. After the last part of the treatment went on though, it was fine and went back to being soft thankfully.Herman - MP for all!
