I started experimenting with hair dye when I was 14.....I went blonde, only it was more of a brassy orange because me and my pal didn't do it properly. Fast forward 30 years and guess what colour I am today? There are some things that people just don't seem to learn.
Given that we are still having to spend money on the house, there's little left in the pot for niceties. I have too many grey hairs now to leave so I have to dye my hair fairly regularly. I get it cut at the hairdressers but I couldn't afford to keep getting it coloured there so I do it myself. Most of the time it works out ok.....I was purple last week. I like to ring the changes occasionally.
Today, I bought one of those kits that have the base colour and also a little pot of a lighter shade so you can paint on highlights....and that's where I've come unstuck. The base colour is fine......I should never have messed with the highlights.:o I now have a bright orange skull cap look going on. I obviously made the sections too wide and they've all blended into one and I think maybe the dye reacted with the purple that was there already which is why it's a truly lurid shade of orange. :rotfl:
I'm only laughing because it's that or cry. Loudly.
Thankfully I only did highlights on the top so I can scrape it all up into a bobble to hide the colour whilst I run out to the chemist first thing in the morning to get a cover up.
Just curious how many people dye their own hair and how many go the hairdresser? If you get colour at the hairdresser....do you treat it as a 'must have' or a nice luxury? Can you afford it easily or do you have to budget?

I dye my own hair - Garnier Nutrisse £3.97 :-) every 6 weeks in their brightest blonde.
I get my hair trimmed every 2/3 months and I treat myself - £15.95 at Supacuts!0 -
I dye mine black most of the time, it's very close (or was before the grey) to my natural hair colour anyway.
I've been red, pink, blue, green - all on purpose but I've had the 'orange by accident' do too.0 -

The great thing about hair is nothing is that permanent. Hair will always grow. As someone who likes to "experiment" I have a great selection of hats too

I dye my hair to cover the grey once a month (it grows quick!) I buy whatever is on offer and tend to stick to brown, this month it has come out nearly black and makes me look ill so off to the local hairdressing college to get them to lighten it for me as I am too scared to go lighter by myself!0

I go to the local haidresser every 6 weeks and pay 50 quid for cut and colour which I felt guilty about till I spoke to women at work who pay over 100 at fancy hairdressers in town. My hair would be white otherwise and I never dyed it before I started going grey in my 30's but I do feel it's a big commitment.0

I colour my own hair normally a chocolate brown - whichever brand is on offer :money:
My bosses daughter was cutting my hair in the salon for £20 - she now does it for £10 at home. Used to be every 6 weeks but it's been almost 12 weeks cos I'm growing it.A very busy Yummy Mummy to a 1 year old gorgeous boy :smileyhea
Where does the time go? :think:0 -
I do it myself every 5 weeks using "Nice and Easy" in a mid brown colour. A couple of months ago I had it done professionally at a posh salon for DD's wedding: "Rich Mocha with Caramel slices on the crown and framing the face - that'll be £60 madam"
Looked great for 3 or 4 weeks, then the shine disappeared, my hair grew and I was rooty old me again. I'll stick with doing my own I think and keep the £56 difference.:D0 -

I've been very lucky with my hair as i've got older.
Others around me have gone grey as they have aged
and although my brown hair is changing, not a grey hair in sight,
I'm now naturally Ash Blond.Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,
What it may grow to in time, I know not what.
