Store cupboard challenge

Had to go and buy some yellow split peas this afternoon - most annoying as I thought I had some in the cupboard.
Bacon, egg, baked beans, mushrooms and hash browns for evening meal tonight. Not something we normally eat at all, but it made a lovely change from the whole potatoes/meat/veg thing, AND - more importantly - used up some things from the fridge and freezer.
Scouse for tomorrow (to be done in the SC) - all the veg is prepped, soup/broth mix is in soak and some shin beef is defrosting.
Had a 'kitchen day' today - freezing veggies that I bought yesterday. Hopefully we've now got enough variety to last for the next month or so.0 -
Morning all,
I've just made 4 dozen flapjacks for the school tuckshop and a chilli for tea tonight. Monday's are 'rabbit's busy day' for me which isn't saying much since I don't actually work for a living:o
My planned leftovers (beef stew from Saturday) have not materialised -no stew left except a tub of gravy which is now in the freezer waiting to be turned into beef soup at the weekend. So, I've made a chilli to reheat while I'm on the swimming run with some baked spuds (wish I'd made double now).
There isn't much meat left in the freezer now -a chicken, 3 chicken breasts, and 2 lbs of mince. I'm considering placing an order with my butcher as it is looking a bit empty in there. I don't want to be wasting money keeping a freezer running when it is only about one third full. I hate being without fish in the freezer too, so I shall be stocking up on value white fish and salmon this week;)0 -
Just had to update my inventory again - veg out of the f/f
and some more gone back in again
. Not that veg was bothering me when I started doing this - it was more to do with the mountain of meat that I was needing to get used up - no point in having meat in the freezer but no veggies to go with it
.
Also had to buy 2 bags of yellow split peas for the storecupboard itself - I really thought I had a bag sitting there - need those for when I use the ham shank that's hiding somewhere at the bottom of the chest freezer.
Good Luck to everybody else who's doing this challenge.

Just updated the list. I'm making another trifle as it is a great way to use things up, (another jelly, custard and fruit gone) and Mr C loves them.
The bread maker is going to be working overtime as well, 1 wholemeal loaf in now and then some pizza dough. Tuna and olive pizza tonight, made for the first time in the remoska, fingers crossed.
The only thing I am really worried about - budget wise is the milk, only 1 jug in the freezer and not a lot left in the kitty. Must make up some powdered milk for the custard tonight. Our days are happier when we give people a bit of our heart rather than a piece of our mind.

Hello everyone  I was going to have prawns from the freezer, but on cleaning out the fridge this morning, found a packet of bacon that needed using more urgently
So we had carbonara with bacon, cream and frozen sweetcorn. We had a fresh pineapple for pudding - a week after its use by date  so it was perfect :T :T :T
DD was dyeing a piece of fabric for her textiles GCSE piece, so has finished my packet of salt :rotfl: :rotfl:
I made marrow and ginger jam for DH, using frozen marrow today.
Over the weekend, the children had friends to stay, so they had some ice-cream and I made muffins with frozen blueberries.
I had some carrots, courgette and squash that needed using, so I've chopped them small and put them into the freezer. They'll be put into casseroles or pasta sauce in the next couple of weeks.
I'm starting to make space in my freezer, but the fridge is looking very empty

Hi Guys
I wanted to share my storecupboard weekend cooking.
I made a scrumptious satsuma & orange marmalade in the BM
Had a great success with a cheese and sweetcorn quiche (been a bit rubbish with hm quiches in the past)
and we enjoyed some sort of pork thing for last nights tea. Pork belly slices with plums and cider cooked slowly in the oven.
Tonight Ive made a butternut squash and splash of red wine soup, and coconut cake.
My weekends are just not long enough since I found OS:rotfl:LBM March 2011 (what on earth took me so long?)overdraft (1) -2950 overdraft (2) -246.00total CC £12,661 :eek:loan £5000DFD 2016:eek::eek: (cant come soon enough)0 -
Well I have been good so far...popped into Sainsburys instead of doing a MR.T online :A
*although I have got a basket ready to check out,I have resisted.honest*
In MrS I bought bread, milk, strawberries and ski yoghurts..I did hyperventilate when I saw all the special offers but OH helped by dragging me round the store at hyperspeed!!
Trouble is my dear old dad went to the butchers yesterday and apparently I have a 'little' bag over there to pick up..containing 8 lambshanks,16 italian sausages,16 cumberland, oxtail and steak :rotfl:
I think he thinks we're skint as I havent had my deliveries *bless him* :A0 -
Well, that's the lamb's liver gone from the freezer now! Served up with mash and lonely carrots and a parsnip. OH is still licking his lips .0

My freezer is looking empty. It is pretty big so now I'm worried that it is running inefficiently.
There are 2 chicken breasts and 2 lbs of mince in there plus various veg, stocks, cooked beans, bready things and muffins. I am going to restock it now;) I shall order some whole chickens, more mince and some sausages. I shall also buy some fish- salmon and mackerel fillets probably.
I'm also going to be a bit adventurous and not rely on freezer meat and fish so much. I have therefore set aside some of my budget for fresh meat and fish each week with the minces/sausages/chickens/fish fillets as midweek fall-back options.
Today I'm going to buy some kidneys* for OH and me tonight (kids having leftover chicken), some lamb shanks (depending on price) for Saturday and a piece of belly pork for roasting on Sunday.
Cupboard-wise I have used up all the pulses but not much of the grains. My cupboards are looking more streamlined and less cluttered. I don't need to buy much in the way of dry goods these days -just flour really.
I'm concentrating on buying fresh, seasonal fruit and veg, fresh meat and fish and dairy produce.
