  • Hi everyone, hope you don't mind me joining in, since being on here I have managed to get our monthly grocery spends down from a sickening (and embarrassing) £600+ a month to £200 thereabouts which I'm pleased about

Now we have 3 chickens which give us fresh eggs everyday but I need some inspiration on how to make some meals out of them (apart from quiche!), please can you all help?
Aug GC £63.23/£200, Total Savings £0
  • Thanks angelnikki thats great.

We keep chickens and Ive often thought about what you can make with eggs, Ive liked the idea of producing a little book 6 ways with eggs!

    1. Pancakes
    2. Egg fried rice
    3. HM Custard
    4. Meringue (from the custard eggs)
    5. Microwave sponge
    6. Yorkie Pud

If you get a real glut you can always pickle them!!

    I've been Money Tipped!
Well done millie monster, on reducing your housekeeping by so much! I envy you the chickens (and the eggs) How about frittata (sp?) You could use up any leftovers that way.

We ate out tonight, a bit of a cheat, I know, but our local does a steak meal for 2 and bottle of wine for £20 so couldn't resist, it was lovely! The soup I made today in the sc can be used tomorrow.

I bought 2 lts milk (1 in the freezer) and a tray of tinned tomatoes today, before the price went up anymore, as I use so much and wanted to keep a good supply in.
Our days are happier when we give people a bit of our heart rather than a piece of our mind.

Thanks for that D&DD! Will know in future - at least it's not been too expensive a lesson to learn :D.

I often make lots of really stupid mistakes where food is concerned - but very rarely do I make the same mistake twice :rotfl:!

I've just scrolled back to my posting from last weekend and edited my freezer inventory. I've made some inroads into it, but nowhere near enough to be able to go looking for a turkey this weekend. Though that 'beef rib joint' is beginning to look more and more like Christmas Dinner to me :D - already got the yorkshire puds, 'fresh' frozen carrot&swede and sprouts! Wonder if Asda have got some 'goose-fat roasties' on whoopsie this weekend:rolleyes:?
  • For those of us who are interested in what other people keep in their storecupboards and pantries -that's all of us right? have a look at this blog.

Click on the sidebar -'other people's pantries ;)

I'm about to start making leek and potato soup with bacon and croutons for lunch.

My beef stew needs 5 hours cooking, so i shall put that in the oven at lunch time.

I've also got a pudding to make.

Beef medallions for evening meal tonight :D. Also removed 2 packs of crumpets (think grandkids may be around this afternoon) and a bag of 12 barm cakes.

9.00pm update - well the Beef Medallions were a bit of a disaster! They were marked 'Grill or Fry' but turned out as 'tough as old boots'! C'est la vie!!

Been shopping today and managed NOT to buy any more meat products.

Lots of veggies (cauli, whoopsied courgettes, 2 bags smartprice potatoes, 4lbs sp onions, loose head of broccoli, sp cabbage, sp stew pack for a pot of scouse mid-week) to go with the stuff we've already got in the freezer (I'll prep and freeze them all tomorrow morning). Got sp apples and pears as well :D.

Also needed 4 trays cat food (whiskas senior rollbacked), kitty litter, 2 bags of sp porridge oats, sp milk, 24 loo rolls, sp fabric conditioner, sp medium loaf (toast for grandkids!), essentials toothpaste (37p), 2 sp loo cleaner, sp bleach, sp all purpose cleaning liquid, 4 tins sp chopped toms, sp red kidney beans, sp strawberry jam, sp marmalade. Reckon I was very restrained with the shopping today :D.

Few Christmas presents have been bought as well as pj's for grandchildren; christmas story books, christmas music tapes and some lovely new unopened smellies in charity shop for surprise boxes for daughter and sons' g/f's; eldest dgd's christmas party outfit (I always buy those for the dgk's - part of their presents :D).

  • Just had to share my concoction that I made whilst using things up!! This will be boyf's lunches for next two days.

    Cooked up some rice.
Put a tin of tomatoes into a pan, grated up a rubbery carrot and added this to the toms.
Added the end of a jar of onion chutney- about 2 spoons.
    Bit of chilli
    Tin of kidney beans
    Squirt of tom puree
    Spoon of green pesto
Salt and pepper- I added plenty of pepper to counteract the sweetness of the onion chutney
Stirred this all and cooked it for a bit and added rice, stirred it so all covered.

Ta da!! Very yummy!! Will eat this cold, although very yummy hot!
