And quite possibly nexy week too!

I checked my shelf in the freezer last night and I have:
2 portions veg curry (in one tub, so will be 2 nights running)
    1 portion veg curry
2 portions veg hotpot (in one tub)
    1 portion soya mince chilli
    1 portion dahl
3 unidentified portions, individually frozen, for when I need some 'excitement':rotfl::rolleyes:

'Frandlord' is cooking veggie mince Lancashire hotpot, so no doubt at lease 2 portions to freeze afterwards.

I have apples and satsumas I got yesterday, then potatoes, brocolli, carrots and frozen peas, various cheeses, plus (shame I know:o) 2 frozen pizzas - whoopsied to 34p each, and about 8 veggie fingers and 5 quorn sausages. Thats LOTS of meals!

No shopping for me this week!

I love the unidentified bags out of the freezer, we often have them on a Friday. One week it was apple and plum puree not chilli, :rotfl:

Hi everyone. This is my first post and I suppose I should have posted first on the Getting to Know You thread but I didn't really know what to say.

I'm really intrigued by this thread and the Monthly Challenge one. And have been trying the Store Cupboard Challenge for the last couple of weeks.

Although some of my cupboard and pantry goods really, really, need using up whereas my freezer is fairly well managed (I've been keeping a freezer book since 1982) with very little that is more than 6 months old, I'm trying to use up things from the freezer because it's pretty full.

The problem is that I'm taking items from freezer and making a meal but then putting back into the freezer more (in volume) than I've removed.

For example, I recently made Minestrone (from Pauper's Cookbook) using a piece of belly of pork from the freezer - it also used some dried beans and some veggies that needed using. I had 2 delicious lunches but then had 6 half pint cartons of soup to put back in freezer.
Result: freed up about 27 cu.in. but used up roughly 200 cu.in. If this goes on I
may never need to buy food again.

The above is just a mock complaint. My next 7 days meal plans are all using items from freezer with little likelihood of having to put anything back in. I just enjoy this thread so much that I wanted to add a post.

Me, too. I can't decide whether chicken-stock pie would have been better or worse than veggie soup with apple puree 'stock'.

    Hello Jill

Welcome to the storecupboard thread - it's definitely the more the merrier round here! :)

I know exactly what you mean about ending up with more food than yoo started with - my freezer definitely feels like the magic porridge pot sometimes (or soup pot, at least ;)). It sometimes seems like my kitchen is producing food out of thin air, although my bank balance tells a different story, sadly!
Back after a very long break!
  • I had mixed success this weekend with the challenge: On the downside I spent far more on shopping than I intended - about £35, but this did include lots of toilet paper and kitchen roll and I didn't buy any whoopsies, BOGOFs for a change!

On the plus side, this weekend I made a pineapple fruit cake, which used up a tin of crushed pineapple, finished of my odd bags of dried fruit, flour and brown sugar. I also used the remaining frozen peas and a tin of carrots with my sunday roast.
I started listing my freezer contents and found 3 small bags of cooked chicken, which I am going to mix with a tin of chicken soup, some tins of mushrooms and peas and make into a chicken pie for tea tonight.

I think there are enough innovative experts on here to take on the professional chefs in a Ready, Steady, Cook challenge. :TThe more one experiments, the more one find the confidence to take some sometimes unusual ingredients and combine them together to make some really tasty and inexpensive meals. What a pity that cookery is no longer taught as a serious subject in schools any more. And that some parents never take the time to involve their children in the preparation of meals either. So much is learned by children in this way, just watching, asking questions and having them answered.

Nuala, don't buy buttermilk! make your own by curdling with vinegar or lemon juice. There is a thread I can find you if you need it

    Edit - ah!
    Thanks zippy - I didn't buy it!

I have mice back in my kitchen and until they're gone I really don't feel comfortable cooking. _pale_ It seems to be a new "litter" of babies and they're fearless! Am using humane traps (didn't work catching the Mummy obviously but have already caught a baby) but family is urging me to use poison.

I have change out of my €2.10 for this week. I just bought 250g mushrooms and a packet of Value custard (no milk needed) for the grand total of €1.28.

Plus, my darling sister treated me to a Chinese takeaway on Saturday.:j Yesterday was just fish and chips from the freezer as I was tired.

Not sure what I'll have tonight - might just bung something in the oven from the freezer so I don't have to stay in the ktichen aka Mouseville!
Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far! :)
Sorry if I don't reply to posts - I'm having MAJOR trouble keeping up these days!

    Mouse-aka, possibly? (Sorry, couldn't resist it! :o)

I had mice in the flat I lived in a couple of years ago - eventually my cat "disposed" of the problem, and I'm not sure if that wasn't worse than the mice!

Anyway, I have a confession to make. I've been hesitating all day whether to actually post this, but I've decided to take the risk despite the danger of being thrown off this thread. So - here goes:

I did my cupboard inventory yesterday and discovered that... I only have one tin of tomatoes left.:eek:

Please be assured this is a temporary glitch, and normal service (i.e. half a dozen tins, at least) will soon be restored! ;) (To make up for it, though, I do have 6 tins of baked beans (well they were on special offer) and 4 jars of honey (umm... I'm not quite sure why, actually! :o.))
Back after a very long break!
