No if you see it in the yard thats fine - but often they just come bounding out of the house.

quote - I wish people would keep out of my garden, I live on a main road and have large gates but people insist on leaving the gate open.

I'd be quite happy not to enter anywhere if they just put a sign to say - no callers or somesuch.
Sometimes when it's hot outside us 'dog owners' like to have our doors open for some fresh air which means the dogs are free to come and go as they please in their own garden. I have also had signs on the gate but somebody broke them off, but I have new signs waiting to go on, Beware of the dog and please close the gate.

My post still stands. I am not an agent of Jehovah, nor a curry leaflet distributor. I visit premises during the course of my work and often by invite of the occupier and yet there is the odd occasion where vicious curs are allowed loose.

I would suggest that Tort law would hold that if a dog attacked a caller who was acting in a normal fashion and going about lawful business, then the very act of such an attack might signify that the dog was untrustworthy and unpredictable and that such an attack might have been foreseen. If you have a dog like this then it would be advisable to put signage up and ensure that it is kept in a secure area when visitors are expected.

    In such circumstances,i would litigate.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

I really cant belivie the OP , as far i'm concerned you enter the dog's terriority,
Do you let your villagers know you are on your way round so they have to keep the dog in ??
if a dog is in the front , its your choice as to whether you enter or not at YOUR risk

If when you enter a house a dog insists on jumping all over you or behaves in an aggressive way then use your head and refuse to go any further until the owner has proper control over it

There really is no need to have a no-win-no-fee type company on speedial

  • We have a sign on our gate saying 'beware of the FEROCIOUS DOG' - never owned a dog / probably never will lol ;) Adds comic value, if anything. :)

Actually we have a few of those too - but all the ones that have the signs don't have the dogs!!

And you didnt get the hint ?
  • Thanks for the reply guys - most helpful.

We just deliver twice a year and think its nicer for each household to get a newsletter delivered - rather than having to collect from a central point.
Its important that people get to know what is going on in their little neighbourhood, as we're very rural - and I would dispute that our efforts are just more recycling rubbish - I hope people don't feel like that anyway.
(We have been taking note of properties with dogs or rough lanes and usually just post their copy. However it just seems to be getting more and more - if they'd just put up a sign we 'd leave them alone - but I've read that a 'dangerous dog' sign is admitting liability - hence no-one does it!)

I am sure you are very sincere in your belief that it is nice and cuddly and very community spirited, but I am afraid I am leaning towards agreeing with those who are sick of the endless dirge of bits of paper and bags which get dumped on my door mat.

Not everyone shares your enthusiam I'm afraid - blame it on the junk mailers if you like. I would be asking myself if the fact these people have dogs, have them for a reason?
  • Well I think its a sad state of affairs if people want to be insular and locked in behind their gates. We did have a family here once like that - who insisted n padlocking their gate all the time - but at least we knew how they felt and left them alone.
Sorry if I've generated the wrong sort of responses - I do see that those of you in towns are inundated with stuff so might feel different. Apart from the postman no-one dumps junk stuff on us here.

I think it's a sad state of affairs that someone wants others to put signs up because they want to stick unsolicited mail though their door. You are creating your own problem by calling at people's houses uninvited.
