I had an original wooden floor brought back to life by a professional floor comany in a previous house and he used the sanding shreds and dust from when he sanded the floor mixed with a glue paste to fill the holes then it was exactly the same colour and didnt show!

We are just about to attempt to do it ourselves now in another house, a cheap flooring option and I think varnished wooden floorboards look gorgeous in any room, I would go for clear varnish rather than paint though as it ages better, paint will wear off over time.
