Whilst using a motor vehicle without a valid MOT is certainly an offence that can attrach a penalty via a Magistrate, your car insurance should still be valid.

Thank you, very interesting about the insurance, and makes me very relieved.
Also thanks to everyone else. You've all been very helpful (well most of you, but there is always one stirring things up!).
My car is probably a right off as it's only worth about £800. I'm just very gutted, but keep telling myself it could have been worse. Everyone is in one piece. That is all that really matters.0 -
Your insurance would be valid, "if the car would pass an MOT". If it lapsed, and the crash was down to non working lights and bald tyres the insurance company would pay the 3rd party claim, then come after you.0

Murtle wrote:is it possible to get one done now or is the car not suitable? If so take that with you to the police as it will be the current valid one. They don't need to know when the previous one expired.
Tried that one when I was stopped without one but they saw straight through it and asked for the one valid on the day of the offence.0 -
I am shocked at the lack of knowledge shown by people in this post.
And would strongly recommend anyone reading this post dismiss such foolish comments.
Sounds like your talents are being wasted. Perhaps you should be crouched behind a bush on the M6 hiding behind a handheld radar :0 .0 -
It already says "peel here".scatz wrote:.....they should print something there so you notice it.
Can you think of anything more helpful than this?
Also, to all those wanting 'reminders'...it's bad enough paying £44 - let alone £46 once they've added on the P&P charge for sending you the reminder. Why not use a diary or a year planner?0 -
balsingh wrote:Awkward situation but a mistake that anyone coudl easily make. The DVLA send us reminders for tax discs but there is nothign of the sort for the MOT. With the tax disc, its also staring you in the face everytime you walk up to the car so you always remember it.
As you the MOT only ran out about a week ago, they might be lenient. At least it wasnt liek 6 months out of date or anythign.
Is it not law to have to a valid MOT sticker on your windscreen then?
I thought it was and mine has the expiry date written on it!

Actually I've just checked and it says:

and I paid £39, which includes a reminder one month before, which is very handy!
