God, some of these comments are ridiculous. How do you know she hasn't saved up all year to buy her children one big surprise for Christmas? Maybe she put it on a credit card? Is it at all relevant to the situation? I would be very annoyed if a present turned up unwrapped.
I've always loved getting surprised, and hated finding out what I was getting, so as the child I would be very disappointed.
