Another vote for the local press as well. I wonder how long it is before the manager hides behind some misconceived interpretation of H&S laws.

Local press, and name and shame the pub on here, especially if it is a chain.

Because (reading between the lines) I believe the OP suspects that the disability is actually the reason the family have been barred...the landlord can hardly come out and say 'No - you can't come in here because your son is disabled.' because that is blatant discrimination. So he bans the whole family.

Yes, but as you say you are reading between the lines, and so is the OP.

It is clearly a matter between the Landlord and the family he barred.

Posting on here and people making presumptions about something when not knowing the full story doesn't help anybody.

The landlord may have had a genuine reason for barring them, or it may be an honest mistake.

Advising the OP to name and shame the pub and go to the papers, is almost getting into a lynch mob mentality, without knowing the full facts.

If the OP really wants to know why the family was barred, his first port of call should be the landlord, although the landlord does not have to give his reasons to somebody who is not actually involved in the situation in the first place.

If there is genuinely no legitimate reason for the boy to be barred, and the landlord refuses to give a genuine reason, I think the press is an excellent idea?

Bigotry and prejudice against the disabled has no place in our modern society and if this really is the reason he has been barred, I hope the landlord is shamed and he goes out of business.

    Serves him right.

Tell the pub you are going to the press and also publishing the name of his pub here.

He then has a "right to reply" to challenge anything you have said here.

BUT WHERE THEY BANNED BECAUSE OF THE BOY:confused:, I thought you said there is no place in our society for 'PREJUDICE'

So why are you showing 'prejudice' against the landlord when you do not know all the facts:mad:

I remember when I was younger (80's) that me/girlfriend would go to the same pub regularly, meet up with friends, etc. Spent a fortune there. One night, girlfriend got a bit drunk, called the landlady a bytch and said the landlord was a crook as she didn't get the right change from a round........instantly banned for life.

Point being, there is clearly more to this story than the OP is letting on (or knows). Landlords do not turf people out for nothing - they need every penny they can get I'd have thought. Have the family offended him personally, did the family accuse him of being racist or anti-disabled...more than enough reason to bar them. Not fair, but as Al Murray says, "My gaf, my rules".

If you take the emotive thread title and remove the reference to 'disabled' would we provide a different opinion on the matter?

    Let's try :-

"a friend of mine has a [STRIKE]disabled[/STRIKE] lad, [STRIKE]he has cerebral palsey[/STRIKE]. he is 16."

As an aside, my Mum & Dad (in their 60's) last year were banned for life from a local chip shop restaurant they used to attend regularly simply becuase my Dad (aka, Victor Mildrew) complained about the portion size of chips to the owner. Dad was livid so i can well understand the OP's position if an innocent family have been poorly treated - but OP needs to pinpoint the catalyst of the problem.
Anger ruins joy, it steals the goodness of my mind. Forces me to say terrible things. Overcoming anger brings peace of mind, a mind without regret. If I overcome anger, I will be delightful and loved by everyone.
  • I think there is more to it then has been let on, as previous poster mentioned, surely pubs are grateful for any business at all now. Very strange.

I'm NOT going to assume your answer is aimed JUST at me, despite the fact that you have quoted my post only. I didn't ADVISE the family to go to the press, I said they could do.
If the family have been barred because of the age of their son then we
can presume the pub does have a strict no under 18s policy. Fair enough. Landlords have a right not to serve any 'customers'; any business can choose who it cares to deal with but may NOT make those decisions based on grounds which could be perceived as discriminatory.
Chances are though that, having frequented this pub for 6 months this family have been disappointed by this decision.

    But why take 6 months?
pehaps another customer complained to the landlord?
