disabled lad barred from pub

Options
can anyone help with any advice.
a friend of mine has a disabled lad, he has cerebral palsey. he is 16.
he has been going to a local pub for over 6 mnths on a thursday evening for the kareoke night with his mother and her partner. He has no behaviour problems etc and u could not meet 3 more innocent unoffensive people.
last night they went as usual, got their drinks, sat down, then the manager came over and said all 3 of u are barred with immediate effect and told them to leave. He would give no reason just told them to leave, as they are so innocent they did so without question. When they had asked for a reason they were told is the managers descretion and it wouldnt matter if they were white, black, asion or disabled, they were barred.
they werent even allowed to have their drinks.
I find this incredible, and cannot work it out!!
Whilst it may be true that a landlord has the right to ban who he wants without giving reason, i also am lead to understand that if they have been allowed to purchase a drink then a contract has been entered into?
Does anyone know what their rights may be, before i toddle off down their myself to ask for an explanation.
thanks

  • You say your mate is 16. Does the pub have a No Under 18s policy after a certain time, even if they are accompanied? Local police may have asked them to enforce this.
    They are an EYESORES!!!!
  • pm the pub name, is it a chain?

If there is not an under 18s policy then they could kick up a stink and go to the (local) press...
To bar all three seems harsh IMHO - if it were just an under 18s policy then the manager could have handled it differently, and could have given a reason.

  • If they wanted to shame the pub, the could go to the local paper and get them to write an article about what happened.

Or they can just accept the landlord is a d!ck and go somewhere else.
  • you should at least have had the drinks refunded. Otherwise the decison should have been made prior to them making a purchase. Is there something missing, do you know if perhaps something else happened. Very strange situation

Seems very strange for the landlord not to give a reason.

Could it be a case of mistaken identity? Could there have been some unknown problems that either the mother or partner wasn't telling?

If you are that concerned, the only way you could find out is to ask the landlord.

Also the title of your post is incorrect, it is not just a "disabled lad" that has been barred from a pub, it is a couple and their son.

You even said yourself that the landlord specifically said it had nothing to do with the lad being disabled, so why is that the title of your post?

Because (reading between the lines) I believe the OP suspects that the disability is actually the reason the family have been barred...the landlord can hardly come out and say 'No - you can't come in here because your son is disabled.' because that is blatant discrimination. So he bans the whole family.

    Go the press.

Put the bigoted clown in his place.

They'll be all over it like flys over rotting meat.

National press might even pick up on it.
  • Name the pub here.

    But why take 6 months?
